Shakespeare was literate. He wrote his name different ways because that was common to do back then. There is some argument he might not have written it, but if he didn't it probably was his wife (a white woman). Heck, Amelia Bassano was a white woman (though she may have had a darker complexion than the regular Englishman). Shakespeare referred to her as the "dark lady", but portraits and descriptions of her all portray her as white, which makes sense considering she was a rich white woman.

Amelia also was a published author of some note as she was the first woman to publish a book of poetry in England called Salve Deus Rex Judaeorum.

Some do say she died in poverty, so that may be true, but for most of her life she was quite wealthy.

Amelia Bassano was descended from Sephardic Jews on her father's side, but was baptized in the Anglican church. She was very cool, very interesting, and possibly the source of some of Skespeare's background knowledge for his Italian comedies. She was not of African descent. Jiminy crickets.

Shakespeare was most certainly literate, but there is debate on whether he wrote his own plays. TBH, we can never know for 100%.
