I think the college should have had another discussion with her before withdrawing the offer. Express their concerns and tell her which of those requests were unacceptable.

One interesting thing though in noting how 4 of her 5 requests had nothing to do with salary. It's important to remember with the "wage gap" that people negotiate for different things. Someone who makes slightly less money but gets a sabbatical, maternity leave, fewer new classes and a flexible start date isn't being treated unfairly.

Well I don't know, what is this supposed to represent? I don't think it's female entitlement. Just, you know, plain old bad negotiating tactics.

I have to say I am surprised at the withdrawal of the previous offer, rather than reverting back to it and offering again. That's a little odd.

Obviously we don't know the whole story but it seems her expectations were so far from the compensation that the employer willing to off that they decided not to counter offer.

Imagine you have a car for sale at $20,000 (and is actually worth that price) and someone offers you $10,000. Are you really going to counter and hope to meet in the middle? Most people will just decline and wait for the next potential buyer.

That is what the university has done and their attempt at shaming them only shows how unprofessional they are.

The main point I see is how PZ unconditionally supported her. He would probably support Hitler if he was a woman who applied for a college teaching job....

This isn't entitlement or female entitlement. It's just bad negotiation blowing up in someone's face.

That is how negotiation works. You can make an offer, but it can have consequences. You make the offer anyways, you can take what is in front of you, or you can look somewhere else.

Her negotiation would have worked better if she'd secured some leverage first (like another offer).

I don't think this has anything to do with gender.

The applicant made some requests that were pretty fucking reasonable, but all combined painted a picture of someone looking to use this job as a spring board to another job.

Everyone should negotiate employment and compensation but we should also realize when we aren't looking for the same thing. If there are two concerns to be negotiated, I'm sure we can figure something out. Three and we are still in the ballpark. Five and we are clearly not on the same page.

Another thing is phrasing. If negotiation was intended, a numbered list of demands isn't the way to present it.
