As an IT professional, I do not have a problem with this.

A) Google is a private firm, and need not concern itself with being perfectly fair.

B) IT is a total sausage fest, and when I talk to girls, many of them would love to do IT, but they think it's too hard (usually, the math is their biggest concern). The few women I do see, though, tend to be among the best workers, so I think there's untapped potential, meaning this is an investment for Google.

The idea behind it is to show young girls that the things they love, from apps on their smartphones to their favorite movies are made with code, and they can apply the skills they learn to their own individual passions.

I'm looking forward to the Made With Raw Materials That Have To Be Dug Out Of The Ground program where we try to get more girls interested in mining. Oh wait... that shit is dangerous.

The more women getting CS and STEM degrees means the fewer women getting gender studies and other worthless degrees, means few women getting jobs as "social media specialists" and "pop culture critics" and other bullshit jobs that amount to complaining on the Internet.

How is this a Men's Rights Issue? Women are under represented in IT, and a correction is being attempted. This is all well and good, but it's not a Men's Rights Issue. The extreme under representation of men in education is. The discrimination against men in nursing is. The near total absence of men in social work is. How is Women's Issues getting addressed a Men's Rights Issue?

Investing millions of dollars to get girls into programming is about the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Someone who actually wanted to become a programmer could easy do so without spending a dime by reading internet resources, oxford lectures, and the thousands of books that cover it.

Numbers are genderless. Ambition, desire, and a love of knowledge is also genderless.

Meh, maybe this will help to make women just as disposable in the work force as men are.

I'm not worried about this. There's an imbalance between men and women in the tech industry. Why it exists and whether or not we should attempt to correct it is up for debate. But it's trendy to try to correct it with programs like this. More than anything else, Google spent $50 million on marketing.

I don't personally see a problem with this or find it to be improper. Google isn't doing this because they're trying to favor women. They are seemingly just trying to create more diversity in a field dominated by men.

I've worked in IT for ten years now, I've had one female coworker who was actually tech savvy, and she was really just basic entry level stuff.

I think their goal is to change that, and this shouldn't be taken poorly, especially when there are so many resources out there already that are free for EVERYONE.

As a developer myself, I'm 100% okay with this. Google is a private company - it's not coming out of our paychecks.

Though we need to acknowledge that there are issues in favor of women, there are several areas where women are behind. This is true for sciences in general, but particularly in engineering fields. That being said, I firmly believe this is not a MRA issue - at all.

Large companies are often severely criticized for not being equal opportunity employers due to lack of a specific demographic. If nothing else, this is a great way to get out of a potential $300m+ class-action lawsuit for not hiring enough women.
