I've been overwhelmed with hostility from people in my area because of it. It has made me realize just how much certain behaviors like groupthink and persecution are constants in human society. What I noticed is that I hardly ever see murderers, rapists, child molesters, etc face what I have had to endure. Yesterday, I received an implied threat involving a dead cat and an article of clothing that I wear out a lot since being subject to harassment. As an animal lover, to think that a cat was killed just to intimidate me makes me feel sick.

The way that I have been treated is the most cowardly, perverse thing that I have ever seen, where somebody who hasn't hurt anyone is ganged up on by many in order to satisfy a false, shallow, pop-culture narrative.

It all reminds me of what Morpheus says to Neo in The Matrix:

"You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so injured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it."

It's nice to think that this mentality ended with historical events like The Spanish Inquisition or the Salem Witch Trials, but it looks like humanity always manages to find a set of beliefs to join and persecute nonbelievers over.
