I've been lurking around the web and have accidentally found my way to some feminist discussions over these past few weeks. Reading what they have to say has made me feel upset over the non-stop persecution of men.
They seem to minimize everything into a women's problem, instead of a social problem for everyone, not just women. One example would be a post I read on a feminist site called skepchicks blog (Which is how I found this reddit, because she noted that it was a subreddit that made her angry) about misogynist and sexism in /r/atheism. They were disgusted about the comments in a thread in /r/atheism where a young woman posted a picture of her self, and was bombarded by highly sexualized respones after she wrote that she was going to prepare her anus. (I'm aware this is an old incident if it's been addressed in the past, but I'm new here and want to vent)
Next thing you know, everyone discussing how the incident is a big problem in the male atheist community. Any comments that suggested thinking differently about the situation were shot down immediately, saying "it's obvious that you're a man" as if that were an insult. Or that because they didn't agree with their point of view, then they were a misogynist for certain.
How did I end up feeling attacked from reading comments? I personally didn't agree with the comments that were written in that thread - I should be on the same side with these feminist, right? Normally when I agree with someone, I don't feel attacked or put down from the person I'm agreeing with. I agreed that there was a problem, and that some comments were uncalled for, but what put me off? The fact that they made the topic to be a witch hunt against men and making the wide spread of disgusting jokes on the internet sololey a women problem, because of men mind you. Not only did they make it a women's problem, but rather than looking at the issue as a whole, they made it even smaller, they made it a women's atheist problem, because obviously all atheist men are sexist.
Now here's my opinion on the issue of misogyny on the internet. I think this is more of an internet problem, rather than a sexism problem. While it would be great to stop misogyny from spreading like a wildfire on the internet, it can be noted that the anonymity of the web brings out disgusting filth. This filth is not limited to misogyny, and to try to eliminate the sexist comments on the internet is an unrealistic goal.
The problem is a lot bigger than sexism or misogyny. The problem lies within the vast amount of ignorant trolls and uninformed individuals who make up the internet in general. These same individuals who tell racist jokes, sexist, jokes, jokes about killing, and promotion of hate are the ones who make the internet an uncomfortable place for everyone, not just women.
The problem I've seen with feminism is that feminist look issues as only women's problems. When we look at an issue from only one point of view, then we risk missing the bigger picture. We can call out sexist comments on the internet until we are blue in the face, but the underlying problem will still be there. Anonymity and the internet will bring out hate. These same individuals will continue to spread their hate on a daily bases and disregard any disproval of their actions. The problem is everywhere, not just in atheist subreddits, not just on reddit, and not just about women.
It's not that I ignore that there is still problems with gender equality or even sexism towards women, it's just that it shouldn't make me feel disgusted to read the views of a group, which I thought I supported, that's supposed to promote equality. I don't condone disgusting filth on the internet, and I don't like being lumped into the group that's causing this filth. If I feel this way, then I'm sure many other people do too, and essentially feminist are creating an US vs Them, and of course we are the bad guys.
I'm not looking for a circle jerk here either, if you disagree with any part of my views, then speak up. I'm open to looking at things from a different perspective. I just had to vent after reading a large amount of feminist comments and male bashing. Yes I'm angry at feminist as of now, but I don't hate women and I still promote equality and basic human rights for everyone.
Thank you for reading my long rant, and I hope to see what men's rights is all about.
