anyone who signs this pledge on either gender is going to have a very hard frustrating life.

the irony is the more likely you are to sign the pledge the more worthless your "support" is, and the more flawed/pathetic and inadequate you are.

What I wrote them:

To whom it may concern,

I have a teenage son suffering from a significant bout of mental illness, mental illness brought on because his mother systematically emotionally abused him and socially isolated him for the better part of 15 years. He fled her world to live with me, the minute he worked up the courage. He's also got a girlfriend that I'm pretty confident is cheating on him, but he's so besotted with her that he's oblivious to the signs and signals, and seems intent on barreling over that cliff without any kind of safety harness.

How can I, with a straight face, take your statement for men, put it in front of this boy, and tell him that he should have the backs of ALL women, when I know for a fact he's been victimized by one, and is likely to be victimized by another in short order?

Maybe this is lost on your organization, but chivalry and chauvinism are two sides of the same ugly coin, and whether a man maligns a woman for her gender, or he supports her because of her gender, he's still ultimately making that decision based on gender ... and not on merit.

Here's my promise: I promise that in all dealings with people on this planet, that I will use behaviour, statements and evidence to determine whether someone is worthy of my support and admiration. I will encourage my son to do the same. Applied as I have laid this out, I'm sure he will have the same general outcome I have had - that there will be a smattering of female heroes, a smattering of female villains, and a bunch of ordinary women in the middle whose behaviour changes by context and has to be judged an incident at a time.

If that's not good enough for your organization, and only blind support for anyone with an XX will do, then I guess you're not the organization for me or my family.
