You can't engage in ad hominems, because even if you prove that it was written by a terrible person the arguments still stand. Your friend doesn't know this because she's bought into the societally acceptable position and feels that there's no ACTUAL evidence that can go against her FEEEELINGS of being right. Just find the key feminist arguments, you know them, things like the wage gap, domestic violence, rape statistics, and have at least one source of contradictory statistics memoriesed so that even if you're caught off guard you can cling to them like a rock in a storm, at least that way you can argue the topic to a stand still which is 10 times better than having no sources and 100 times better than saying nothing and leaving the issue to fester.

People who go for unfounded, emotional arguments are usually counting on you to sink to their level. Just keep the "I ain't even mad" mindset and stick to an open-minded but skeptical examination of the data. Data can be misrepresented (e.g. the wage gap) or even poorly collected (e.g. the 1 in 4 rape statistic), but that's where a little skeptical scrutiny comes in handy.

Regarding the credibility of your sources, she may or may not have had a point. Strictly speaking, ad hominem is a fallacy, but it's reasonable to consider certain sources highly suspect if they garner a bad reputation (consider how most people in this sub regard the Gawker network). I see quite a few posts here from the dailymail, and I skip right over those because it seems like kind of a low-quality rag to me. If you do happen to find a good argument or study or statistic or whatever posted in a questionable media outlet, track down the original source and refer to that instead.

You need to really know the research before you invoke it when you are challenging the dominant social narrative. If, on the other hand you are invoking the dominant social narratives you can quote almost any source and be believed.

If you want help with this coworker you are going to give us the details of the argument you were having so we can work out a strategy.
