This looks like it might be out of context to be honest. Either that or it's just a silly joke, defying expectations of the adult normally being the one to handle the big words and help the child sleep.

This actually reminds me of my childhood. My parents were immigrants and I was a fast learner. I mostly learned how to read by having subtitles on and the volume off on my cartoons. After a while, I was correcting my parents so much that I ended up reading to them until I felt tired.
