It absolutely is sexism. It is the very definition of sexism: "discrimination based on gender". The fact that it might be a good business practice does not, in any way, make it any less a form of sexism. Businesses capitalizing on pre-existing sentiments of sexism/chivalry, and perpetuating those sentiments for further financial gains, is a practice that should not be encouraged or socially supported. At best, it's a greedy practice that is completely unnecessary(businesses would still function just fine without having to resort to discrimination; women would still go out to bars irregardless) but, either way, it still supports and legitimizes an archaic way of thinking and sexism(which ends up reinforcing an attitude of entitlement from women when it comes to bars, men and dating).

This is the same principle as women's only gyms, women's only hotel floors and women's only trains, which are also blatant examples of businesses capitalizing on socially supported forms of sexism and misandry. For example, if the majority of a certain ethnic group felt a certain disdain towards a minority group, and were willing to pay a little extra to avoid dealing with any of those other minorities, that would still be a form of prejudice towards those minorities; and the businesses that would cater to that kind of prejudice would be just as guilty.

Ladies night is usually just a ploy to get more guys into the bar. It has nothing to do with actually trying to do something special for the ladies. The bar just knows that the girl guy ratio will improve and the bar will get a better reputation. Sexism, no. Smart business, yes.

This comes up regularly. It's obviously sexist, even if you think it's good. Many libertarians don't care because private property shouldn't be controlled like that. Yes, that means refusing service to blacks is OK. Not everyone here is a libertarian and not every libertarian is even a capitalist.

Sometimes it's possible to legally force clubs to drop lady's night or have a gentleman's night. I think it depends heavily on the local laws.

Don't patronize bars that have ladies nights. You could try organizing a small scale boycott of the bar to get the point across that it's not acceptable to have such a backwards practice.

Don't try to pick women up in bars. Anywhere will do, the beach, trains, shops etc. Basically any public place. If you do use bars, clubs etc, do not think you will get anywhere by being generous. Read Richard Feynman's essay "You Just Ask Them" for information on this curious matter. (This is Richard Feynman the physicist.) In the unlikely event that you do get somewhere by paying for things, you will merely have found yourself a freeloader.

I think it is sexist, I just don't care.
If a business wants to treat its customers that way then why not? I won't be going to any ladies nights and I will think less of businesses that host them. The only people you are likely to meet there are the kind that don't mind scavenging for free drinks. Those aren't the people I am interested in meeting and if I would want to meet those people then I would go to one of those businesses.

I am somewhat libertarian so I don't care. Neither would I deny a business the right to reject black people. I would consider it morally despicable, and I would never set foot in a business that rejects black people as it might give them the wrong impression that I am ok with their business strategy. But I wouldn't deny them the right to do so.

Ladies nights are an advertising strategy. "Come one come all, there are a lot drunk women here!" Some people think it is a price worth paying. There are plenty of guys to whom that is an attractive sales pitch.

If businesses want to treat their customers like crap then let them, as I wont be one of them. If there are enough customers who want to be treated like crap then let them.

It's sexist.

To prove it, you can take a walk through the dictionary with anyone that disagrees with you:

Sexism - discriminatory on the basis of sex

Discrimination - The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, esp. on the grounds of race, age, or sex.

Just - Based on or behaving according to what is morally right and fair

So is it morally right or fair to provide a free product and service to one group of people but not to another? This can be examined in another way (gender removed):

It's Whitey's night at your local bar. White men drink for free. Black men still have to pay.

It's English night at your local bar. Brits drink for free. The Irish still have to pay.

It's Capitalism night at your local bar. Capitalists drink for free. Communists (confirmed OR suspected) still pay.

It's Christian night at your local bar. Christians drink for free. Heathens and witches still pay (the witch can probably just conjure one up anyway).

Hope that clears things up. I'd take it up with management, but I doubt it would get you anywhere. It's common practice to do things like this. You see ladies night at bars and clubs used to draw people in.
Another way you can go (which would take a lot more) work would be to convince the men that frequent the bar to stop going on ladies nights or to boycott it altogether until they change their ways.

It's sexist, if you take it out of context.

The "idea" behind ladies night is to encourage single women to come out to the bar to meet single men (whom are all ready presumed to be there). If they would change the name to "Even out the ratio night", it would hold true to the spirit while removing sexist connotations. But marketing.

There have been clubs taken to court for this. It depends on the state. I can think of two specific instances in Florida, and New York state. I'm sure there are more. If I get un-lazy and decide to find them, I'll edit in the cases. It will vary by the state, and sometimes by the county.

I personally think it is sexist, but as I don't frequent bars [and as a former bartender] it doesn't affect me very much. Its much cheaper to just drink at home, or with friends. The allure of the bar scene has diminished greatly for me. You will not meet many life long friends, and the quality of women is barely above pond scum.

Well, it isn't necessarily sexist. Sexism is basically discriminating against a someone or something with no reason to do so.

For example, if you are making a movie based on World War II, requiring those who audition for the role of Hitler or Churchhill to be white males is not sexist or racist, as there is good reason behind your discrimination.

On the other hand, to require those who apply to work at your retail store to be white and male is without good reason, and sexist discrimination.

In this example I think the business model is to draw in more women and make more money, not to be dicks to men. The only argument is that if the same law were applied to, say, whites drinking for free and blacks having to pay it would be seen as racism even if the business could make more money with this rule.

I think the issue is more with the fact that the government should either treat all discrimination equally when telling people how to run their businesses, or butt out entirely.

Not as much sexism, as a good business move. What they should do, is give men half off those nights too. Or something of the such. The bars just to it to get more women in the bar, thus attracting more men. It's more of a "men's night" disguised as a ladies night.
