I think that most people who disagree with this are Hippocrates of the greatest order. They say shit like "if you didn't want a baby, you shouldn't have had sex with her" while turning around and saying "a woman has a right to chose". It's simply amazing how they can't see the double standards there.

I agree. But what we really need to do is give father's the right to parent their children. Legally, fathers are nothing more than wallets. If that's your legal function then "financial abortion" would be a logical choice. If you have a legal right to parent your child and not be marginalized out of their lives then taking on the responsibility looks a lot better.

Your thoughts are what have been named "Financial Abortion." While the name may change around, the idea is the same. Her body, her choice, and her responsibility if he doesn't want a part of it.

I'm of the opinion that the idea of a FA should disappear after a reasonable time (say a couple weeks before she can legally abort). Even if she is pro-life, she can still drop it off using safe-haven laws. Or send it away for adoption.

Sure, there's some logic flaws in this that she can use to exploit ("forgetting" to tell him of her pregnancy), but it's far better than what we have now.

I love feminists trying to spin a story for me telling me this is not fair and will legalize deadbeat dad behaviors. It's amazing how much projection is cast when you think of all the choices women have that free her of her "responsibilities" as a mother.

I agree. I think men should also have the right to choose if they want to be a parent, within the same time frame a woman can choose whether she wants an abortion or not. If he doesnt, he does not have any financial obligations nor any right to the child at all. He 'signs it away'.

Of course, that does bring up the issue of whether the child is adequately cared for. The child is a human being too, and did not choose to be here. Is the child getting what he/she needs without the biological fathers financial support? If so, then that is fine. But what if not?

What would you suggest? The cost be on the tax payer - who didnt choose for the child to be here NOR to have sex with the mother - rather than the father?

What about the child having a male role model? Of course, if a man signs away his rights then perhaps he would not be a reliable role model anyway since he didnt want to be a parent.. and even men who do want to be parents in 'seperate families' NOW do not get enough of a chance.. But it still needs to be considered.

What if he changes his mind? Do we ever let him back into the childs life despite the fact he had no care about the childs upbringing? The child hits 18, and all of a sudden the father wants to be there and know his child? Do we just refuse and make it legally impossible, despite what the childs wishes may be, because this is a man who did not care for raising the child? Do we send the man to prison if he tries to see his child? If he wants to be back in the child life at any point, should he be required to give back payments DIRECTLY to the child (if old enough? And a lump sum in an account for the child if not old enough, as well as continuing financial support for the primacy caregiver for the remainder of the childs youth?) for all the years of financial support he missed? What do you think?

It brings up a lot of questions. I personally think the first step would be everyone pulling their fingers out of their ass and finally providing men with more choices of reliable birth control (injections, pills, all thats possible etc) so men have more control over if they become a parent from the start. But changes do need to be made in regards to this, too. The kinks just need to be worked out, because there is a 3rd innocent person involved now who doesnt deserve to be shat on.

I think an ideal model involves two decisions

The practical decision of whether each parent wants to take responsibility. Each has equal opportunity to opt out at this point (some call this financial abortion, I don't like the term, I prefer "abdication of responsibilities/rights)
The ethical/medical decision of whether a woman gets an abortion, or does whatever else. This is solely her choice based on the knowledge of her own views and the results of choice 1
