We aren't stupid. If we're employed and married, and lose our jobs, divorce is just a heart-beat away.

i dunno about that. i mean that sort of scenario has definitely happened plenty, but not enough to where it should just be an assumption. and when that kind of thing does happen, the question of "did i truly care about you enough to marry you in the first place?" or "why did i really marry you?" should be asked.
i am a girl who has dated one man who was, at the time, going through a divorce and currently i am dating a man who is also far along in that same process. ive dated guys who were not in that predicament also and it was merely coincidence that i found myself in the same situation with my boyfriend now. (only my current situation is inordinately happier)
i stayed by my ex at some of his lowest points and all he did was lie to me, see other women when he made me think he only cared about me, and treat me like dogshit. and i had to move 964 miles to virginia for a job and under the more than reasonable assumption that we were going to be together, only to find out through his friend that he had been seeing other women and lying to me about it for the past 6 or so months...
my boyfriend now is at the tail end of his divorce process and he's a serial entrepreneur....so things have rather harsh ups and downs. he told me after a few weeks of us dating that he had only a year ago been left by his wife, that he was unemployed and floating by on odd jobs for the time being. sure i thought about it, but he seemed worth it at the time so all i did was keep him company, lend him gas money to meet with potential business partners, or occasionally buy him dinner. neither of us keep score, so to speak, and we help each other out when the other needs it. and me helping him did the opposite of crushing his ego. hes also helped me enormously. he helped me restore my ability to trust people, be more confident in myself and hes generally made me the happiest i have been in a long loooong time. now he has a kickass job and hes the one helping me in the material sense.
his ego obvioisly didnt yield so easily to something silly like a woman helping him out when he needed it. he doesnt feel the need to be superior to me, and i dont feel the need to be superior to him either.
so from my experience, patience is a function of how much you care about someone, how much you care what everyone thinks about you and the way you view yourself.
and there are plenty of stories like mine of shitty situations that turned out alright. so i just dont believe women are that mean to throw someone out of their lives when things get rough. and he and his wife split up for mostly immaterial reasons that had just built up over the years.
