If you’re of a certain age and you meet someone who you are about to go to bed with, and that person doesn’t have a Facebook page, you may be getting a false name. It could be some kind of red flag.

I deleted my facebook account for 3 reasons...I couldn't care less for the meaningless drivel that most people were posting, 98% of the people that had me as a friend on facebook were not actual friends, just people that knew me and finally, too much time is wasted on facebook that could have been better spent doing something else. Having a life does not = being suspicious.

Good grief. Knowing how prospective employers, stalkers, and identity thieves use people's internet history against them... how can anyone feel justified requiring a public display like that? Might as well tell men, "If you want to date, you have no right to personal privacy from the public, or to personal boundaries and personal choices like not putting your life all over the internet."

In reality, it's a stupid concept. Don't these people realize how easy it is to set up a sanitized, highly faked facebook presence? Like ANYTHING you can find out online about a person is any kind of guarantee. :/

While the article uses gender neutral pronouns in some places, the message is obvious: This suspicion is directed at men.

I suspect this might be a case of xenophobia: "I am a woman and love technology, so if you're a man and don't share that love for technology, you're suspicious."

Edit: Here's a google translation of a German article which is linked to in the posted article, which says, "Aurora shooter didn't have a Facebook profile, therefore if you don't have a Facebook profile you could be a mass murderer. No job offer for you."

Awesome, I've lived my whole life attached to a computer pretty much, yet I have never taken to "social networking" so I'm one of the people being talked about in that line.

I tried myspace when it got popular and I lasted 3 days before I deleted the damn thing because all I got was spam invites from bands which had nothing to do with my taste in music and random people I had no interest in talking to.

Facebook didn't become a big thing until myspace started to die and many switched form myspace to facebook, so I wasn't there to make that jump and have no interest in doing so.

All that aside ... wouldn't it be EASIER to stalk people if you DID have a facebook? And don't get me started on twitter, there are probably a fair few people you could track down and follow simply using their inane "tweets" as they go about their day.
