A horrible but common story. It’s a hard read for parents in the same position.

I only read the first couple paragraphs, but I swear a few months ago there was another article by a lesbian who basically said the exact same thing, she was sickened that her son wanted toy tractors and whatnot.

Read the rest of it. He does give the kid what the kid wants in the end.

To me, femininity was connected to empathy and kindness while masculinity equated to being frigid. Men didn’t hug. Men didn’t say I love you. Men were angry. Aggressive. Inept as parents.

Contrast with...

My father was never afraid to blur boundaries. I was hugged frequently and told I love you. He, too, despised sports, but loved watching Hallmark movies with my mom. After his employees started selling home-manicure sets as a side hustle, my father spent nights sitting at the kitchen counter beautifying his nails.

What feminism does to a MF.

Has a loving father figure who cares for him, yet somehow convinced that masculinity means inept fatherhood. I don't think he even realises it just reads as a backhanded insult to his dad, either he secretly viewed his father as an inept and unloving parent, or as "not a real masculine man".

I shuddered at jokes about men being incapable of figuring out how to work a diaper, yet I felt most couldn’t. I became even more of an avid stereotyper: I grimaced at anyone driving a Ford car, the John Wayne of automobiles. I hated men who wore plaid. Felt ill if someone mentioned a wrench or another tool. When my mom-in-law bought Avishai a coverall with footballs on it, I shoved it into the depths of his closet, never to be found.

Seriously, seriously messed up ideas about fatherhood. It's like he lives his life in 80's sitcom stereotypes whilst constantly "Not like the other men"-ing himself. I will say one thing upfront: All that constant internalised guilt is not good for his son. Children are perceptive of these things.

When he asked to watch clips of construction equipment, I mindlessly pressed play. But when he demanded the shirts, I felt like I failed him. I pride myself on blurring gender lines. I wanted him to, also.

I had to make a choice: buy him clothes with pictures of heavy machinery on them and make the kid happy, or force him to wear shirts emblazoned with fuzzy animals to appease me.

The abject horror.

Seriously......speechless when I was reading it.

[–]alclarkey 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"Not like the other men"-ing himself.

He's a MUSer. Mus: Male Unicorn Syndrome. Just remember, "All men are sexist, raping, selfish pigs." Except for him, of course, he's the unicorn, the only good one.

I grimaced at anyone driving a Ford car, the John Wayne of automobiles.

Uh, what the fuck even?

Legit sitting here laughing at your comment....I mean, just fk!!!

[–]Viesegel 12 points13 points14 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's straight up child abuse.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 9 points10 points11 points 4 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

masculinity equated to being frigid.

This guy has no idea what masculine stoicism is. Stoicism is not stuffing feelings, burying them, or turning them off. It’s about having mastery over them instead of letting emotions master you.

[–]harleypig 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Apropos of nothing, your comment made me think of this.

So, I get a lot of crap whenever I bring this up but it really works for me.

Vulcans are an idealized form of masculinity.

Vulcans in Star Trek are often referred to by fans/watchers as emotionless, super-logical aliens. This, despite the fact that it's an open secret that unchained emotion nearly destroyed not only themselves but their planet, and several episodes featured Spock (and a movie with a different Vulcan) giving in to their emotions and chaos resulted.

All of the stoicism and rituals Vulcans have are based around mastering their emotions. The Romulans, an off-shoot of the Vulcans gave the Federation many headaches. How bad would it be for the Federation if the Vulcans said "Fuck it, we're in charge now"?

At this point, I usually get something along the lines of "but that's fictional, this is real life!"

Yes. We created the Vulcans. Well, mainly Leonard Nimoy did--but the fans made them real. So to speak.

Leonard Nimoy based a number of Vulcan behaviors on the teachings of his Jewish childhood, not just the spread fingers of the Vulcan salute. Other rituals from other disciplines have been added over the last few decades.

Most of, if not all, these rituals had real-world adherents before they were co-opted; and most still do.

Basically, men are stoic because if we aren't ... well, ladies, you won't like us when we're unchained. Or, maybe some of you will ...

Also; The Kirk|Spock|McCoy triplet worked because all three are basic stylized|idealized forms of masculinity. All three of which have some form of stoicism. By which I mean what the Stoics practiced, not the corrupted form we have now which replaces resilient with indifferent.

[–]WhereProgressIsMade 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Thanks. I actually did think of Spock when I wrote it too. I was a trekie back in high school. I liked Picard and Riker too as good masculine examples. There’s not just one way to do it well.

[–]harleypig 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Three acronyms I like:

  • IDIC (ih-dik): Infinite diversity in infinite combinations
  • TMTOWTDI (tim-tow-dee): There's more than one way to do it
  • TANSTAAFL (tan-stahful): There ain't no such thing as a free lunch

[–]YourPillsAintWorkin 6 points7 points8 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That “father” looks exactly like I thought he would.

[–]PandaFoo1 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

This is dumb as hell. This is just pushing expectations onto your son but the other way around. Just let the kid decide what he likes and let him do his thing.

[–]Angryasfk 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Exactly. He’s being the exact opposite of what he claims to be.

[–]MrStone1 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That kids testosterone is already higher than his dads.

[–]Laytheblameonluck[🍰] 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Who taught him that men don't hug? That's not true.

The case is, men don't get hugs! That's different to men not hugging.

[–]YesYesYesVeryGood 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

This guy is acting like teaching his son about machines, fixing things, working out, and liking sports is going to transform his son into a rapist. I mean, that to me kind of sounds both sexist and racist.

[–]EasyOutside4[S] 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

True story. I mean…what’s wrong with raising boys to be good boys and later good men? Why this guy hates men so much should have been in the op ed.

[–]YesYesYesVeryGood 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. I would say that man is stigmatizing his son.

[–]odysseytree 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Attraction towards different things is biological. Boys are attracted in things and women are interested in people. No matter how much feminists try to hide this, they can never defeat nature.

[–]bottleblank 7 points8 points9 points 4 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

But whether that's true or not, what if it'd been a girl? What if she'd liked tractors? Would that be OK, because it's "breaking gender stereotypes"? Why can't a kid of any gender just like whatever it is they like?

The kid doesn't care whether it makes them masculine or feminine, or know what gender even really means in any real way, they just see a thing, or hear a song about a thing, and they figure it's pretty cool, and they want more of that thing.

[–]Angryasfk 3 points4 points5 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

EXACTLY! What a manipulative tool!

[–]Huffers1010 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's always worth caveating that stuff. It's all true to a degree, but I personally don't want to be tarred with the brush of men being violent, because it doesn't describe me.

That's sort of what I think we're here to push for (it's certainly what I'm here to push for). None of us are slaves to the statistics, men or women, and that's what's so often misunderstood.

[–]JCgamerX 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

i think we have to distance ourselves from what is masculine and what is feminine and just be good parents. empathy is a strong thing to have and I think just let kids enjoy what they want and embrace it

[–]Ferbuggity 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

What a complete and utter wanker.

I read how his kid liking tractors made him "spiral into darkness" and knew the whole thing would be batshit.

[–]Ahseid 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

lol

[–]Anih1list 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

On the bright side, these parents will be constantly tortured for their misandry and denial of the fact gender cannot be changed by social pressure.

[–]mykoiy 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I really feel bad for our young boys. They don't have the right to choose what they like.

[–]63daddy 2 points3 points4 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Any parent who tried to prevent their child from acting as the sex it is should be arrested for child abuse. Their kid should be removed and put in a less abusive environment.

[–]ElJeffHey 1 point2 points3 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This idiot needs a manly smack upside the fucking head. What and absolute wank muffin.

[–]ignatztempotypo 0 points1 point2 points 4 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Toss this guy into a room full of hard core feminists and watch him wiggle and giggle on the floor like a baby waiting for mommy to wipe his bumbum. SMH
