So today there was a tweet about body positivity for men on our front page.
"Boys, your bodies are perfect. It's okay to have a tummy, or to be skinny with no muscle. It's okay to be short and have acne, stretch marks and cellulite. You are all handsome in your own way and deserve to love yourself."
...A majority of users on here replied with negativity, saying it's virtue-signalling, and that this statement is stupid and dangerous to young men and the movement for men's rights, and that some people just objectively aren't beautiful.
Kind of like the people that look at a burn victim (who had her entire face erased) and call her beautiful. She (sadly) clearly isn’t, anymore, but people just say it to be nice.
Bullshit. The world is vain as hell. Get in the fucking gym and be someone. Everyone respects the guy who clearly puts work in to better himself and his appearance
But saying your body is inherently "perfect" and "handsome", including acne, stretch marks and tummys isn't a good message. Especially as those things are not innate and mostly fixable. A lot of that is just objectively unattractive and you need to work hard to fix or compensate for.
Here's the thing: beauty and attraction is subjective to a society's standards, let alone an individuals's standards. In the real world, women date "ugly" men, and men date "ugly" women, and they find each other attractive! It may not be common for an acne-ridden, short and overweight man to find a partner in a vain and judgmental world, but you can bet there's millions of guys like that who have. Their partners find physical beauty and attractiveness in them enough to want to date or marry them.
That burn victim is still beautiful just the way she is. Her face is totally fucked up, but that doesn't mean she isn't beautiful. She won't be any happier being forced to live thinking "I know I'm the most unattractive person here", she will be happy by accepting her imperfections and that they don't actually have to impact how beautiful she knows herself to be.
-- Beauty is a subjective standard and widespread standards for attractiveness differ from society to society.
-- You are beautiful just the way you are, with your scars and acne and height and weight and you deserve to love yourself. Regardless of your physical appearance, you are handsome and beautiful in your own way.
-- When you are confident in your beauty and love yourself regardless of how unattractive you or others consider you, you can love (verb) your body by losing weight or staying clean and hygienic.
-- Loving your body does not make you a better person, nor does it compensate for "unattractiveness". It may according to a vain world's standard of beauty. Loving your body is attractive as a quality because it shows you care for yourself. Not caring for yourself doesn't make you "unattractive", though.
You can fight against the common feminist message of:
"You are perfect just the way you are, so you shouldn't change a thing about yourself and should just love (feeling) your body. You should never feel like you need to change anything about your body"
by saying
"You are perfect and beautiful just the way you are despite your physical imperfections, and you should love (feeling) your body. And you can love (action) your body by treating it with love. You should never feel like you need to change anything about your body to be beautiful".
