I am from France. I've heard a broadcast from the national radio about the innitiation of some "passage rites" from boys to become men (it was for 12yo boys, I think). I don't know if it's a sort of organization or something who does this, neither of how influential it is. They said the fathers come with their boys to a place (like, in the woods, like a training camp) where they are summoned to some physical competitions where they should prove their capacity to be strong and motivated. Then there is a ceremony where they have to swear they are getting rid of any teddybears and any affectionate names or surnames people around give them. They have to swear to go to their mothers and siblings and say they just want to be called by their real name. They have an oath that, by becoming men, they will work hard, respect women and girls, and do anything in their capacity to protect them to whatever cost. Then there was a ceremony where fathers would put ashes over the boys' head (???) and finally being told that now, they are real men, they are not supposed to complain anymore but just do their duty and to respect and protect women. I thought to myself: wtf??? The journalists (women and men) found this amusing and rather positive, even if they didn't express it clearly. I find it traumatising and really showing what society wants for men today: to be providing and expect nothing in exchange, to be hard and hard on themselves, to be there for a mission and to have no right to hapiness.
Besides, who on the world talks to men or boys about their right to happiness? No one.
