According to their statistics, “1 out of every 6 American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime (14.8% completed, 2.8% attempted).” But we know that statistic to be false based on other sources [1]. It then says, “About 3% of American men—or 1 in 33—have experienced an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime.” Which gives the impression that men being raped outside of prison is not as common as women being raped. But again we know from other sources that male rape is surprisingly more common then we could ever imagine, almost equal to female rape [2]. Finally, it then says regarding child sexual abuse, “In 88% of the sexual abuse claims that CPS substantiates or finds supporting evidence of, the perpetrator is male. In 9% of cases they are female, and 3% are unknown.” Giving the impression that women committing child molestation is not as common as men committing it. However, once again we know from other studies that female-only perpetrators of child sexual abuse is about 20.8%, and female with male perpetrators accounts for 18.3%, together that means women are involved in at least 39.1% of child sexual abuse, compared to men who encompasses 51.0%, while 9.9% are unknown [3]. So should we trust RAINN’s data, are they biased or just ignorant on certain aspects of sexual violence? Or am I the one missing something?
