Same kind of thing happened to me one day with an ex-girlfriend's female boss. I walked in to pick her up from work and her boss immediately assumed I was looking for a job. "I only hire women". I was a bit offended, but I thought quick enough to hit her back with "oh well I wouldn't work for a woman anyway". She looked at me like I just took a shit on her floor.

Its only legal if there's a warranted reason for it, like physical abilities or specific instances where it would be needed. You could of potentially filed a lawsuit, which the university would either then be forced to hire you or reach a settlement. Next time that happens ask a lawyer, that professor is ignorant

Race, creed, color, national origin, sex, marital status, disability, age (Over 40) and presence of a trained guide dog or guide animal (like a monkey) are the things you are not allowed to discriminate on for employment loans and housing.

There is potential for very painful lawsuits and investigations by the EEOC and other organizations if you violate this law.

In some states this list is more inclusive and adds things like sexual orientation but that isn't a federal law yet. I guess it hasn't even been a couple years since the federal government itself was firing people for being gay.

I had the opposite situation. I am an education major, which is completely dominated by females. I applied for an internship and was confronted by a professor who expressed her disapproval of giving me the position because I'm a white male. Well, after a little talk with the head of the department about how men are sorely underrepresented, she agreed and I was awarded the internship. I'm sorry this happened to you, and honestly I don't feel very good about taking advantage of a system that rewards people solely on the basis of their race/sex, but I had to use it to my advantage.

I'm usually the first to point out that something is illegal, and this usually is, but in this case it might not be.

It really depends on the position and how it was funded. If the position was being funded with a grant (ex: from NSF) that had "under represented" groups as a stipulation for rewarding it, then she can only hire on that condition.

That said, it probably wasn't the case. You don't see a whole lot of grants like those - but I have seen a lot of racist professors/support staff trying to "affirmative action" grants regardless. Which is funny, because most NSF grants come with a non-discrimination clause.

What's even more funny, however, is that you're actually an under represented group. The number varies by degree type, but typically, women make up 2/3rds of students/graduates in education.

I was once interested in persuing a BA in Primary Education. I went to meet with the head of the Primary Education department who in the space of 5 minutes admitted that there is a glaring shortage of male primary school teachers in the United States, but discouraged me from entering into that program because she said that in all honesty, it would be extremely difficult for me to get hired, because I was a man.
