GENDER BALANCE YOUR BOOKSHELF GUYS

[–]Kettellkorn 20 points21 points22 points 8 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

That’s one of my favs on this list. Until this day I was almost 100% gender and racially blind to the books I read. Now I have to go out of my way to not read books I want, but to read books only by trans/gay/queer/non binary/Latino/Black/Asian women.

[–]devious29 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I'm just gratified to find that some of the writers on my shelf aren't actually dead yet.

[–]Ace_W 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Right?

[–]devious29 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's a bit of an odd coincidence, the last two authors that I've "saturation read" (Terry Pratchett and Ian M Banks) were both alive when I started reading them...

[–]CTeam19 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't know Harper Lee was a woman. Didn't change my opinion on To Kill A Mockingbird.

[–]Kettellkorn 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That’s because the realty is it doesn’t matter

[–]tenchineuro 8 points9 points10 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You want me to assign gender to a book's author?

[–]andejoh 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Does that include the porn?

[–]BetterBadIdeas 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah...that would tend to change things.

[–]TracyMorganFreeman 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Half my bookshelf was built by a woman, but she wasn't a carpenter, so now it's collapsing to one side as the other side eventually can't hold all the extra weight.

Eesh almost a microcosm for society.

[–]loganblade14 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My bookshelf is full of pop funko and video game cases

[–]thrway_1000 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Vice has been trash for a long time.

[–]Alphonetic 5 points6 points7 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So essentially, I have to not only go out of my way to find those authors, but I basically have to make sure it’s equal for all parts? What am I supposed to do with the other ones once all the authors run out, burn them?? Also, what kind of millennial owns physical copies of books??

[–]chadwickofwv 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

what kind of millennial owns physical copies of books??

Excellent point.

The shelter one is a good one, tho.

Those folks can use all manner of things and pads (and other toiletries) aren't something that anyone thinks to donate.

Taking them goods that they can use is always appreciated.

One Thanksgiving, we had a mix up in our party planning and ended up with two people bringing a 16# ham. Our local shelter didn't bat an eye at taking one of them and getting it served.

Ask them what they need most.

[–]probably_a_squid 6 points7 points8 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would imagine that shelters buy these things in bulk, so it might be more cost effective to simply donate money. Ask the shelter.

Logic balance your brains, ladies.

[–]Wisemanner 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Gender balance your bookcase?

Be my guest, ladies!

[–]Leinadro 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

In case someone wants to read the whole thing.

Edit: Looks like someone posted this here right around the same time this screenshot was posted.

Why go through all that trouble though?

[–]x3stealer112 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Balance?Lol,who are you?Icefrog?

[–]Mythandros 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What absolute drivel.

I will never get back the time I lost reading that. This is the real tragedy.

[–]vhisic 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The first one is a good one, I would expand it to include more than just female specific things, men need hygiene too, but do indeed donate to a local shelter.

[–]T_Rash 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Jokes on them I don't have a bookshelf

[–]theothermod[M] 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The title of your post does not say enough about its subject. This forces people to click and read before they can decide whether they are interested. It also makes searching impossible.

If everyone did this, the subreddit would become unusable.

So please don't do it. Take the time to describe your link, and save the time of hundreds of other people.

When making a title, it's best to assume the reader doesn't know what you're talking about - but don't go overboard with every detail. Then check if there are any words you can cut out without losing any important information.

[–]Leinadro 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Okay can we get another reporting option for posts like this?

The person took the time to take a screenshot of a portion the list, scratch out the parts they didn't care about, and upload the edited image in order to share it....instead of just posting a link to the article itself.

Posts like this are just ragebait looking to piss people off and get them mad at Vice.

I mean if we are expected to be outraged can we at least get the whole article instead of a cherry picked screen shot?

[–]dinnerwithfunions -1 points0 points1 point 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Never really thought about how rare black female authors are.

  1. I care about MEN's issues.

  2. Fuck no. Men are better creators. This is not an opinion.

  3. Men are better writers. This is not up for debate.
