I've only ever seen it used in two ways:

1: A man significantly overestimating the intelligence of the women he's talking to. Normally, it requires a sign that he's only doing this because the person is a woman, but it's routinely used to just mean "A man being unjustly superior".

2: By a feminist who thinks men shouldn't be allowed to object to feminism.

I've never heard of anyone using it to refer to explaining something to men.

This is the first time I have ever heard this term. It sounds superfluous and silly and should be disregarded in my opinion. I have my doubts that anyone would use this term seriously.

"mansplaining" is basically where someone with an agenda has taken something that anyone might do (i.e bullshitting) and try to make it seem like it is limited to one gender. As if a woman has never ever talked to someone about something in a condescending manner or tried to seem knowledgeable about something they haven't a scooby about...

It has since taken on a life of its own as a tool to silence criticism whenever a man tries to explain to a woman why she might be wrong about something.

I swear I see new misandric terms like this popping up almost every other day, but to be honest I don't find many of them insulting - they just come across as extremely infantile to me. Making up silly little terms and words is how children argue when they don't have a real argument to use. I genuinely feel bad for the people resorting to this kind of behaviour.

So yeah, to me "mansplaining" means "I'm very rapidly running out of valid points".

It's the equivalent of back in the day when they'd claim women were hysterical. It's a way of silencing someone based on their gender.

I understood it to mean a conversation or debate, where one person makes every effort to cheat and exclude the other (as such it is a useful term, one every forum desperately needs to understand, this one so often). Unfortunately because of the inserted gender agenda the term is rendered useless.

I suggest it be amended to radsplaining. Short for radfeminist obfuscation posing as explanation. But at least this way it can be used in either direction (radical mra etc).

I think it is a very real issue. There are definitely some men who assume a woman can't be knowledgeable about a topic, or assume their best guesses about a situation will be superior to a woman's knowledge. They proceed to belittle the woman while displaying their own ignorance on the topic.

I am not blaming women, but in many of the stories I have read, the woman fails to speak up and correct the man, saying "look, I wasn't just guessing, I actually have studied this topic for years"... doing this would shut down any "mansplaining" quickly.

Then there are some feminists who accuse any male who speaks his opinion of "mansplaining" and uses it as an excuse to invalidate his opinion and tell others not to listen to him. Not only is this stupid behavior, but it also teaches men that the issue of men treating women like they're uneducated isn't real - instead it teaches them that it's a feminist buzzword that means "shut up you stupid stinky man, I'm not listening to you".

When there is a perspective that a woman knows more about (either because she's more experienced or because women in general know more about it (like pregnancy & she's a mother)), and a man assumes he knows more than her. But I think in most cases, it's just a know-it-all not seeing gender (there might be more male know-it-alls but there are certainly female ones), rather than "entitled man thinks woman brain small".

its primary use, however, is "you are disagreeing with me (and probably a man) so shut up and go away".

Lemme mansplain this to her - first the bread, then condiments, then meat, then some vegetable and finally the second piece of bread. Put that on a plate, cut it or don't, but some potato chips or pickles (maybe both). In other words MAKE ME A SAMMICH!!!
