Unquestionably. Prostitutes can find, screen, and arrange to meet johns without having to leave the couch.

If you make it easier to participate in a lucrative part-time industry, of course more people are going to do it.

Marginally. The male demand for sex is so high that increasing the supply of (risky, illegal, often expensive) prostitutes isn't going to materially affect anything. This is doubly true because what most prostitutes are selling (a one-time sexual encounter that comes with no guarantee of the woman displaying any sort of interest or affection) is actually different than what most men are looking for (sex with a woman who genuinely desires them, preferably with the potential to lead to a relationship).

Actually... No. I'm something of a history buff and prostitution used to be way more prolific than I think anyone in this day and age could even imagine. In 18th century London one in eight women were prostitutes at any given time. Back in the day it was one of the only occupations open to lower class women... that or the back-breaking labor of domestic service.

Given the dearth of career options even poor women have now, I think it holds much less-- albeit some-- appeal.

Nope... not even close. And anyone interested in the subject should read "sin in the second city" or "spectacular wickedness" about the turn-of-the-century sex trade.

Again, it used to be incredibly common. And there's a historical trend wherein the more accessible and reliable prostitutes are, the later marriage tends to occur. As someone who thinks later marriages are generally more successful, I don't think it's a bad thing.

Yeah the internet has helped the entire black market, most notably drug dealing via the DNMs. Of course the world's oldest profession has benefited too.

In areas where it's already legal I don't think it's had the same significant effect since legal services could already advertise openly in magazines etc and still do, but I'm assuming you're talking about illegal prostitution in your OP. Also, even where it's legal, the internet makes it easier to work independently rather than for an agency - see Adultwork for example.

Probably. The fact you can exchange details online instead of standing on a street corner certainly makes it more appealing.

Not at all. Seeing a prostitute is not a replacement for having a girlfriend. If it was, no one in Amsterdam would ever be in a relationship.

Prostitution is legal where I live and I am an escort. I definitely think it should be decriminalised everywhere.

I doubt that it has that much of an impact on the dating scene. I'm not sure the advent of the internet has led to there being more prostitution than in the past (street hookers were way more prevalent back in the day than they are now, as was soft prostitution). I do think the internet has changed the way that women engage with sex work ie less street work, which is a good thing.

Men who patronize prostitutes aren't prime dating material anyways. They are generally scumbags cheating on their wives, or no hopers who have no other way to get laid.

That said, why are you distinguishing between prostitutes and most women? The difference ultimately is the time period between successive johns. Most women give up on husbands who have lost their jobs. This was reported on during the worst years of the recession. Sure, they give up because the man ceases to be a man in their eyes, but the effect as far as the man is concerned is the same, or even worse, given divorce rape.

I am certain that if I were in a job during that time where I could have been laid off, I would have been, and my marriage would have ended a lot sooner. Several friends on the Wall Street and other industries went through this experience.

I don't think it'll have any real impact on the dating scene since only a tiny minority of women seem to be prostitutes and most of them seem to be Romanian immigrants.
