We have become an incredibly visually oriented society at a very rapid pace. For much of humanity, someone like Meghan Trainor would have been the prettiest girl in the village. Now she's maybe a 4 or 5, according to terpers. We would catch a glimpse of someone like Brad Pitt a couple times in our lives. We had sex in complete darkness or candlelight for much of civilization. Now, we are contantly exposed to heavily photoshopped images of the most beautiful people in the world. It is my opinion that high speed internet is much more responsible for the shift in the SMP than feminism is. Not only are people more isolated from real world relationships, but our attention spans and patience levels have decreased. This has caused a huge change in the way we interact, and in the space of a generation. I am thankful I grew up before technology created this shift.

Before going to bed, millions of men go to pornhub or their adult website of choice and get off. Women on the other hand go to Instagram, twitter, fb, okc, tinder before going to bed. Social media and online dating is validation porn for women.

Men are getting oversexed and women are getting over validated.

An interview I heard on the radio recently really drove home how much validation women have available to them via social media:

The interview was aired the top sports radio station in a huge US media market. On a station that has two hosts in the state's radio hall of fame the interviewer in question is easily one of its top-2 most talented hosts. It's not a stretch to say he's on par with some of the best sports radio guys ever, and in addition to local radio he blogs and does regular spots on national sports radio programs. The station itself has won at least two major national awards for sports radio programming in the past twenty years. In short, this guy is almost certainly a top-30 sports radio host nationwide and almost certainly a top-50 host across all formats. He's within shouting distance of being the best in the world at what he does.

The interview took place at a football camp at a local college -- the host's show was doing a remote spot out there during the whole day. They had lined up a number of interviews through the school's athletic department, and one was with a new member of cheerleading team. A college freshman who hasn't even started classes yet.

At some point in the conversation it came up that they both have about 80,000 Twitter followers.

I'm sure she's very attractive, but it's likely she's "hot girl on campus" hot; not common, but not a huge outlier, either. And simply be existing she can get the same social media pull as a male professional near the pinnacle of his field.

I love the shift towards male objectification and precoccupation with their own looks. Love that they get knocked down a peg when they see what women really want. Love how they obsess over height and lifting hurr durr. Let the low self-esteem flow through you, self-appointed male 8's of the world.

you know what works like a charm with men? Negging. Make it absurd, make it ridiculous, say flat out "You're short, not interested" see, it sounds absurd to us, but that is the language men speak, because that's how they rate women. They will believe it and cry themselves to sleep that night.

By the way, women's body image has been skewed since forever, instagram is nothing new for them, they are accustomed to that. What you're really complaining about are the fitness dudes and ripped hot male models on instagram and the thirst their female followers have for them is what is a blow to your self-esteem. You practically see that sex for those guys is two clicks away. You wish you could have that but you don't. and that makes guys livid. Serves you right, though. Love every minute of it.

Reading the comments on there brings a few conclusions:

It's amazing how little respect some men have for themselves.
Beauty is common.
Women are human -beings-. They are valued largely simply for existing. Half these women are just wearing swim suits or maybe some yoga pants, and men are falling over themselves to lick the dog shit off their shoes. Conversely, men are human -doings-. We are valued for status and accomplishment.
I don't know what metric you're looking at, but based off of the bulk of the pics these women are significantly larger than 36in at the hips.

I have always thought about the "prettiest girl in the village" concept mentioned by /u/GynaTynglez, and I believe that Web 2.0 has evolved our tastes way past where they should be. Men weren't supposed to be slobbering over women who transcended all of their physical and socioeconomic barriers. Even in a city outside the castle, peasants never got a glimpse of the beautiful princess. Now, someone can watch the "beautiful princess" engaged in fellatio with a guy whose penis is twice their size. The fact that people know how good it gets and where they rate alongside "the best" is unhealthy for the human mind. When did anorexia become a thing? I doubt it existed before mass media.

Eh. Men and women both do this; personally, I think the pics look trashy unless there's some real excuse for being in that state of dress. Like if I'm looking through profiles on OKC, I'll think less of you if you have a topless flexing picture on there. You're not the guy for me.

Why would it make the opposite sex feel insecure to see that? The world had plenty of pinup girls they couldn't get prior to this point. I can't really wrap my head around this idea.

In terms of the skewing body image thing, personally, I think the risk of this is ridiculously overblown. Part of growing up is coming to the realization (if you harbored the delusion before) that you're not perfect, and you're never going to be flawless.

In terms of good/bad, realistically, it's almost entirely meaningless to me. The only time I really confront this reality is when I'm doing online dating, and then it gives me a lovely red vanity flag, and helps me select against men who pose like this.
