Thoughts on public school?

I was home-schooled, but when I got to college I noticed that there were kids from public, private, and home-school environments and that there were kids doing well from all three, and kids who struggled, from all three.

Now that I'm a parent, I think it's really parental involvement that makes the biggest difference: kids will turn out pretty well from any kind of halfway-decent education system if their parents are involved with them and their education. That said, your kid's school should complement their family life. They shouldn't be too sheltered, no, but not too overwhelmed with contrary ideas too.

We home-school our kids not because we think our public schools are bad but we think we can do at least as well and probably better, because we can customize the learning for every kid, every day. No organized school can do that.

Public schools vary widely between cities and even different neighbourhoods. We lived in a “poorer” neighbourhood (houses were still in the 450k range so still not a particularly low income area) when our first was elementary age and moved to an upper middle class neighbourhood and catchment over the summer. The difference in between schools is pretty startling. The new school is far better equipped and staffed. There are more teaching assistants and less “problem kids” that take most of the teachers attention. Every classroom is well equipped with books, supplies, tech and smart boards. Our old school was not nearly so well equipped despite near constant fund raising efforts.

It’s really sad that the public school quality can vary so much in different neighbourhoods but it absolutely does. This is one of the reasons we can’t really talk “the public system” as if it’s all the same everywhere. It’s absolutely not. A public school in an upper middle class neighbourhood might well give a much better education than a private school in an economically depressed neighbourhood. If I had realized how big a role that played we would have moved a lot sooner.

The private schools in my red area are just as awful as public, and I’m not cut out to be a teacher. I found the best school climate I could, and it was a public school zoned to a fairly small area. So, it just depends on your area and ability to teach.

Side Note: The public school my kids go to is almost a little too much 50’s gender roles for me hahahaha They split the girls in boys in my daughter’s class one day: boys off to STEM lab and girls off to a Home Ec class. Then, they didn’t reverse it the following week. Shit, men need basic home skills and women need basic STEM education.

Wife is a public school teacher in a red state, and very red region, and she doesn't want to send our kids to public school. I was also homeschooled until jr. high sports drove me to public school. I definitely would not send a boy to public school in today's climate. They will ruin him and leave him with a shitty education. What happens when you send him to college, either he has the base to build from or you send him somewhere like Hillsdale that will nurture and develop strong values.

A key thing to evaluate is for private or homeschooling is the syllabus. That will be the trick to selecting somewhere that is different than the bluepill factory. With all of the avenues to educate children these days sending them to public school might as well be viewed as sending them to indoctrination camp.

I'll eat beans and make-a-wish sandwiches before I send my kids to public school.

I won't say much on public or private schools because I was homeschooled from first grade through high school and anything I would want to say has pretty much been said already. What I can talk about is universities.

I go to LSU which, for being a state university, is honestly not terrible. The biggest thing is to instill the values you want early on, but don't shield them from the existence of opposing views. In fact, I would say teach them about the opposing viewpoints while reinforcing the facts that prove those viewpoints wrong. Unless your kids go into university with really good understandings of how statistics work, they will be easily fooled by professors who throw around a lot of BS statistics and info unless you prepare them ahead of time.
