Hi, I'm Laney [18, female] and I would be really grateful for some help about something that has been bothering me very much for some time now. First I want to apologize, this is my first day on reddit so if this post is wrong in any way or I made a mistake or offend someone just tell me, this is not my intend and I'm sorry if I did.
People around me don't like the way I want to live my life and I know I should not care but with all the arguments I keep hearing I start to have thoughts like I'm wrong and maybe need to change. This is really hard for me and I know it sounds silly but right now I just don't know what to do or think anymore.
I love to be feminine and cute, I laugh a lot, I like to bake, cook, collect vintage clothes, aprons and need everything in my room to be pink and frilly and cutesy. I know I still need to be smart too, so I study hard and try to get good grades but I don't want to be a genius, I want to be silly and funny and I'm often not really serious about many topics people ask me about.
I only want my own house with a family, a baby and a wonderful husband. I don't mind doing the housework and parenting at all because I really love children and having a sweet girl as a daughter is my absolute dream so I'm fine with my husband providing for me.
Yet all my female friends keep telling me I need to start my own career, start to act like an adult and only think about family once I am married. They tell me I'm childish and only old people are still thinking like me, they are all really successful and some of them already started their career and earn a good amount of money so I feel like I'm left behind. Many times I'm also not able to keep up with the business topics they like to talk about.
My male friends tell me almost the same, they say I should try to be more independent and this way I'm only getting a guy that won't respect me and treat me like crap, is this really true? I did not have a boyfriend until now, I'm too shy but the guys that tried to hit on me really don't interest me, my friends tell me weak girls only get hit on by weak guys who wouldn't even be able to provide for themselves.
Am I just wrong and is my thinking too old fashioned for today or do I need to find other friends because I know I shouldn't be around people who try to change me but I still like them and again I am very shy and not good at making new friends, I'm very grateful for the few ones I have...
I apologize again for spelling or other mistakes and hope you can help me because I'm feeling so lost right now. Thanks in advance.
TL;DR: Are my friends wrong for trying to push me into a career and should I change my lifestyle according to that or are they just wrong?
