Should I take a makeup class?

I feel like taking a class when there's lots of resources available for free on the topic is a potential waste of money.

After visiting the make-up counter for my favorite brand at Macy's, I felt I knew a lot more about make-up than before. I knew next to nothing, and now I think things like, "I need this bronzer in my life!!"

I'm going to school for makeup artistry now and the best thing I can tell you is to watch and study Lisa Eldridge on youtube. Now, normally I advise against copying youtube gurus or Instagram "artists", but she has an amazing credentials sheet and youtube isn't her main game. Her looks are so feminine and beautiful. Even her more dramatic looks still leave way to look like yourself. Which is the problem with a lot of Internet gurus.

You want to focus on a no makeup look at first. Once you have that down, the other things will be simpler. Try to not fall into the trap of using too much product. If you don't need foundation on your whole face, don't use it all over. Also, heavy contouring is way too harsh for every day wear. It was designed for the heavy lights of the red carpet. If you must contour, do it with a light hand.

If you go to a class, check the artists credentials. If their last big thing was 10 years ago and they haven't changed their style since, skip it. Look for someone who has studied current trends and products. Who has current work. Who won't try to sell you anything but knowledge. If they start piling on lots of heavy product, politely decline. You want to master a light and quick everyday look before anything else. ;)

Didn't you millenials have mothers? Why on earth would someoen need to take a CLASS on how to put on makeup? Are you planning to wear professional stage makeup abround your SO for life?

If you can stomach YouTube tutorials, look at those. There's r/makeupaddiction, which has recommended products both high-end and drugstore, and a lot of tutorials if you search for them. If money is not an issue, go ahead and buy stuff at Sephora, but there are many drugstore versions of high end products that are almost the same thing, and work just as well or better.

Brushes: You do not really need to spend hundreds on them. I have cheap Real Techniques brushes and then I have a few nicer brushes from NARS and MAC, but I reach for my RT brushes more. Sonia Kashuk's anniversary brush set at Target is an awesome deal and the brushes are very nice, you literally get all your essentials plus some for 40 dollars.

Makeup: I don't use drug store brands besides NYX. NYX Milk is great for an eyeshadow base so the shadow doesn't crease and it turns up as it's true color. Their butter lipsticks and glosses are awesome, literally the only lipgloss that doesn't bother me. Otherwise I buy everything else from Sephora or MAC, but I also get a discount at MAC which eases things a bit. The main difference between drug store and mid-high end is the quality and the lasting power. My NARS lipstick will last all day with a lip liner, but I would have to reapply a NYX lipstick multiple times. I never had luck with drugstore foundations matching me perfectly as the shades are limited where as more expensive options had more shades and I was able to get a sample/try it on in the store. This is all a personal preference and what works for you as well as your budget. My daily makeup lasts for months before I have to rebuy it so to me it's worth it.

Classes: I'd say check out the sub makeupaddiction and read all the tutorials they have there. Read, read, read! Then watch a lot of tutorials. Wayne Goss was already mentioned, but look for Sssssamantha as well because she has great tutorials too (name may be an S off or so. You can google her and she will come up though). You don't need a class unless you're going to make a job out of it and that's the only time I would really recommend one because they are pretty pricey and they focus on certain techniques rather then an entire face generally.
