I just moved to a new city so I go on a lot of online dates. Since I value my privacy, I’m not into trading nudes before the date, which makes it difficult to get the girl to come straight to my place. Which means we have to meet up somewhere. I have a strict no-dinner policy the first time I hang out with someone because:

(1) No quick escape route if things go sideways (2) Who wants to watch a stranger eat? (3) If you’re going on a lot of dates, that gets expensive quickly.

In the past I’ve always paid for my dates whether they offered to pay or not since it seemed like the best way to make a decent first impression. Since I enjoy craft beer, I only go to decent bars that serve it, which means a tab for two can easily hit $50 after we each have a couple drinks. This also gets expensive quickly, especially if you’re getting a low ROI, which I had been lately.

Then I discovered this classic article from 2010 and it changed my life.

I make a decent living (6-figs), so I only target women with professional careers. After reading that article, it dawned on me: why am I paying for these women’s drinks (when they can clearly afford their own) then feeling like a chump if they don’t go home with me? Online dating has turned into a cesspool of women trying to score free food and drinks out of men so it’s difficult to screen out the scammers before you hang out.

Problem is, when you tell the server to split the check you can practically hear her legs slamming shut in disgust. So the challenge became how do I apply what I learned in the article to these meetings without putting out a negative vibe. The answer I discovered was so brilliantly simple, I can’t believe none of my guy friends have mentioned it before...

Bathroom Breaks.

On your way to the bathroom, find your server and make sure they know you’re splitting the check. This avoids the awkward question at the end and the negative vibe that goes with the answer. In her mind, she’ll think the server did it on their own. All you have to do now is act normally, hold your ground, keep the conversation flowing, and pay your bill as she pays hers.

It’s been a month since I began using this strategy and my closing rate has improved. It’s too soon to tell if it’s because they know I’m not some beta that’s going to get scammed for drinks or just because my technique is improving. But even if my closing rate went down, it’s worth it for not having that “chump” feeling you get when you spend a bunch of money on some random girl’s drinks and have nothing to show for it.
