There are different cases of oneitis, and various reasons.

There's the classic one, caused by prolonged scarcity. Spend a decade or so pickled in sexlessness, and you can't imagine losing the first woman that takes your D and releases you from the sexless hell.

Then, there's the guy who has been terrified systematically by his unsatisfiable mother. He's been made her carer, her provider, her narcissistic supply ever since he remembers himself, even earlier. When he partners with a woman, she takes up the space his mother used to take. He may find it impossible to even get it up with another woman. This is one of the most pathological types of oneitis.

As you mentioned, Chads get onitis too. That might be because one particular woman takes up that space I describe in the previous case. He might fuck "sluts" liberally, but one woman might trigger his mother issues.

Then, there is something we could call "normal" oneitis: a woman that stood out as an experience. This might be circumstantial, or she might really be so super. The point is that she made it a special emotional experience for you. It's normal to "grieve" it for a while, for a few years, the first time, to a few days, when you've done that before and are experienced.

It's always problematic when that grieving becomes permanent, of course.

I don't like the evolutionary biology explanation at all.

Humans are more complex than some monkeys that became people.

For myself, I have dated and had long relationships with women where we had great times, but when it ended, I wasn't too upset. Sometimes, the time you invested seems wasted, but still I'm not super upset.

Then I will meet one woman and instantly feel connected which is rare. Then I'm upset when I find out she's already engaged or something (no I don't want to date women who are taken).

So it depends on the woman. Some women you just feel on a visceral level. Its not rational, but we are spiritual beings and some women you connect to on a spiritual level.

Being heartbroken isn't necessarily weakness. It happens to all of us. It's the people who become bitter and "I ain't never gonna get attached to no bitch" type people who worry me.

I like romance, it makes life more fun. You can't be genuinely romantic without being a little attached.

Because it is considerably harder for a man to get a woman, than the opposite. Being alone means, aside from the emotionnal loss to deal with, having to go through the grind again. But IMO a man should never quit the hunt, even being with a partner. Because once she's gone, you'll have a steep mountain to climb, again.

So the man will give freely and willingly to the woman, who then gives freely and willingly to her children. (well, some of the time, but better than not at all).

Evolution doesn't care whether it comes from a healthy place ('spiritual connection' thing EquanimityForMe said) or unhealthy place (attachment issues, scarcity etc), so long as it works sometimes.

Most healthy women do actually get turned off by the unhealthy version. But there are women who do allow the unhealthy version (eg successful NPD men), or they themselves are broken so an unhealthy bond is better than no bond. (eg codependent couples)

Some of these answers aren't wrong, but none so far are really getting to the real reason. This is a really good question because the answer really lays the basis for understanding some other key concepts.

It's not biological, it's socialization.

Boys and girls get widely overlapping socialization regarding mating and pairing up, in this case, specifically concerning what romance is, and yet you notice that the results are vastly different.

Lots of guys on TRP have said "Men are the real romantics" and that is mostly accurate because women may SAY they believe in "romance" and even talk like it, but their actions show this is not true. (Women actually don't know what they themselves believe.)

Women will do the most depraved shit for the right guy without any "romance" at all, and they will SAY they need "romance" from their ordinary bland partners before they are ready for whatever, and then they actually never come around turned on like they "promised."

So what has happened? A lot of men have "overcome" their natures and gone with their socialization. Most women don't have any incentive to overcome their natural programming.

Why do men rely on this socialization? Because they need every advantage they can get, and they think that relying on this "romantic" Disney vision of the "Some day my Prince will come" (lol) gives them an in with women who also believe that, the problem being, most women don't really believe that.
