Rule of thumbs for good handshakes :

1-Warm and dry your hands. Prior to handshaking, either visit the restroom to wash it with warm water, use the blow dryer, use your car AC, or put your hand under your armpit (provided its dry and clean). Avoid shaking hands if you can if your hand is cold, sweaty.

2-Veeery slight turning of hand so the back of your hand is facing upward. Communicates dominance. Be careful who you use it with, you might want to appear submissive in some situations.

3-Pressure. Mimic the other person, and then apply a tiny bit more pressure. IF he's a squeezer, squeeze - but a tiny bit harder. If wimp, light handshake but with a tiny bit more pressure.

4-Index finger on pulse. I found this really useful. Don't know why it works, but lightly touch the pulse of the other person with your index finger.

5-Imagine the person you're handshaking with with angel wings and a divine light from above. IT will suddenly produce warmth and positive emotions which will reflect in your body language and face expressions. You cannot fake this unless you trick your brain and subconscious to create 100s of miniscule facial expressions and body language.

From my days in business consultancy, I can confirm that handshake is VERY important. When I was first being trained on the essentials, a proper handshake and eye contact + half smile was part of the training to leave the most professional impression.

We were also taught to use a handshake to weigh up what other people were like. Weak handshakes came from people who could be bullied and pushed around. Handshakes that were like vice grips (i.e. so hard they actually caused pain) would be done by the insecure and incompetent. These people would be easy targets for manipulation and causing self-doubt or spreading negative propaganda amongst their co-workers. Lack of eye contact would indicate low confidence and/or poor social skills so that would typically come with a weak handshake anyway. If it didn't, it showed they were aware of their failings but weren't solving it properly (or yet.)

The ideal handshake, firm (not hard! Do not cause pain. The standard reaction in the office to anyone who did that was "what a dick. Does he think he's doing a power play." Cue laughter at the twat.) with good eye contact and a slight curl at the edge of the lips. (The beginnings of a smile, but not a smirk or an actual smile.) Do your own thing, don't be out to grip harder than the other person. The idea that this goes to dominance is a schoolboy's pissing contest from some weak pseudo-psych. You don't care what they're doing because you're a confident man and you are in control.

I learned how to give a proper handshake around from when I was in JROTC freshman year of high school and during my Business school thing in 11-12th grade.

They are fairly important. Just make sure you don't overdo the firmness and over-offer handshakes in general.

ie. I have a friend/colleague that goes for an overly aggressive handshake nearly every time we meet somewhere. I've got a high opinion of the guy, but the handshake stuff detracts nonetheless.

Something I've been don't recently is... sort of jamming my hand into theirs. So that area between thumb and index really connects. Not too hard but I've found it really makes for a more intimate but manly shake. I've been complemented on it frequently. Eye contact, as others have mentioned is vital.

Another thing to emphasize when talking about this is to not squeeze so hard that the other dude thinks you're trying to break his fingers. That's more annoying than a person with a pussy handshake as it means you know what a real handshake is supposed to entail, except you can't carry it out. See this a lot of times with women in business. If you shake my hand like you want to break it, I know you feel insecure about your position or how you got there.

Firm, but not painful. That being said, there's absolutely nothing you can do to make a better first impression with a man than to have a solid handshake. Plus it just makes you stand out more and more as our society becomes bigger and bigger pussies and the avg person feels like I'm shaking my grandma's hand

I also like this topic because it's the first aspect of being a man every boy should be taught.

I want to add on to this a little bit. If you work in a position where you go to conferences through work or for a hobby, you already know that first impressions are incredibly important. You want to be memorable to other people, and you want to be remembered in a positive light. A good, firm handshake is a key part in your impression, but I would say the keystone to a good first impression is making them remember your name. And the easiest way to do that (specifically at public functions): wearing your nametag on the right side of your chest.

Think about it. You shake with your right hand, so typically you have to look for their hand in order to shake it. Then your eyes travel up their arm, across their chest, then to their eyes. You want to put your name out there in the way of their gaze. Since their eyes naturally go up the right side of their chest, you should put your nametag there.

Pro-tip for those waifs that are just getting started: It's important to make sure that as part of your lifting routine, you include some form of exercise that strengthens your wrists.

Despite my best intentions to leave a first impression, my wrists used to pop occasionally when I was shaking hands. I'm sure this left a shit impression and I used beat myself up about it. I still cringe at my first handshake with some of my superiors at work.

Get them wrists strong.

HOLY FUCKEN SHIT! This guy had one of the best, most firm and respectful handshakes I experienced in my life. Solid eye contact, extended arm and pleasant chatter. It really left a lasting impression. (Im posting here, thats how good it was)

Sometimes this site makes me wonder if I'm autistic, since I never really thought about this subject beyond the fact that men are supposed to give firm handshakes. It would never occur to me to remember a man based upon his handshake, or even to really care about the handshake to begin with. However, I will have to be mindful of my handshakes in the future, especially if someone starts to turn their hand in dominance.

It takes one person to make sure the hands make proper contact. I usually look at the hand to make sure it connects. Does the other person do this? Do most people not look and rely on peripheral vision?

I'm actually starting to get used to weak half-assed handshakes. I'm not so sure it will matter much anymore since long-term I will not be living in a Western country where it is viewed as more important. Conversely, some of the best handshakes I have had are from Non-Westerners, go figure.

People remember you by your handshake. Not sure why, but I remember good and bad handshakes from 20 years ago.

80% of your max grip strength, turn your hand over so that your palm is down (displays dominance), eye contact, and smile. A great handshake should only last one or two seconds, but it should leave a mark on that person's psyche. Relationships are often won or lost at the first handshake. And for Christ's sake, have some callouses on your hands; nobody wants to shake a baby's hand.

I get complimented a lot on my firm handshakes. Even had a couple people admit they didn't see it coming since my hands are the size of a nine year old boy's. On the flip side, this sometimes turns into dumb tests of strength at the pub with other drunken yutzes that tell me "give me a firmer handshake" and I can't because babby hands = babby grip.

Still, I'd rather have a small handed firm handshake than a limp wristed one any day.
