Modern religion has boiled down to Jesus is my genie and if I accept Jesus/pray to Jesus/worship Jesus etc then He will go shazam and fix all my problems. They forgot the phrase "God helps those who help themselves" so you need to work on yourself first.

This is actually true. Last year I went to this old church my family attended when I was young. It was very conservative. Only men in charge and women had to sit down and wear veils. Old school Latin culture. Fast forward 20 years and I walk in and the church is filled with single mothers wearing pants,many have tattoos and really all the trappings of today's modern women. Kids running around screaming and the "men" just going to and fro basically being beasts of burden. Strangely they were actually the only ones dressed like they went to church. As soon as I walked in a could feel the single mothers eyeing me up. Totally fucked.

This isn't a new problem. There was a disparity between men and women in church that dates back to the 1700s. Even then, women, and the male pastors were wondering how to get men in the building. In the 1800s, many preachers and priests were known for consorting more with women than men and adopting female mannerisms.

A huge part of the problem the church has it that, simply put, you sell to your existing customers. If it's women, then that means you aren't going to talk sing militant songs like "Onward Christian Soldiers" or give sermons challenging people to follow in Jesus example of austerity and devotion. The sermons that are given are instead saccharine, such as urging the flock to consider the lily of the valley and how God cares even for the Sparrow. Jesus, when he is presented, is presented as long-haired hippy boyfriend Jesus in songs like "He Walks With Me and He Talks With Me".

Men want to be challenged. Early Christianity rebelled against the Romans and their Gods. Christian men carried their faith into the north of Europe, against determined foes. No man wants to be sitting on the church redecorating committee, and it shows.

The challenge of Christianity has become how to be challenged as a Christian. You won't find that in women, or ironically, in church.
