I keep seeing stuff like this and I have two comments... one of which is going to show my age.

Comment 1 - I don't get all the hate directed at chain restaurants. The reason they'll chains that we all know about is because they're popular, and they're popular because people like to go to them. Ragging on middlebrow chain restaurants sounds a lot like virtue-signalling with regard to one's "classiness" (classy-signaling?). I like the sirloins at Applebee's. I like the biscuits and the chicken dishes at Red Lobster. I like the steaks and bread at pretty much every steak chain I've ever been to. I don't need to drop a couple of c-notes at Ruth's Chris to be satisfied with my dinner, and I'm secure enough in myself to say so. Shoot, I travel a lot for my job, and some of the best restaurant food I've ever eaten has been in cheap hole-in-the-wall places the locals told me about... like the place I went to in California where the tri-tip tacos come on a paper plate and I drank Jarritos mango soda right out of the bottle. I had some pretty amazing food the other day in a mini-mart that has a few tables and a grill. In short, there's nothing wrong with Red Lobster, and anyone who looks down on chains because they're middlebrow is a pretentious douche-bag.

Comment 2 - This is going to show my age. In my day (when we had to walk to school... barefoot... in the snow... uphill... both ways), I always paid for dates, and I didn't go for the cheapest venue possible. Then again, that was before the internet and way before phone apps, so unless you were specifically going as platonic friends (more like a "+1" arrangement), going on a date indicated that you were actually, mutually interested in each other. The rules were different because the dynamic was different. That said, there was more than one occasion wherein I found myself playing tonsil hockey with some chick I just met (no date required), but if I had ever taken one of them on a proper date I would have taken her someplace nice. But I don't have to experience Tinder culture myself to understand why a guy today wouldn't want to spring for extravagant dates for some girl he's probably never going to see again. Now it's just a numbers game, and getting a date is a lot more "random" than it was when I was young and getting a date was the end result of a series of deliberate decisions by both the guy and the girl.

I realize that there are two different schools of thought on the paying for meals concept and what is acceptable or not acceptable expense for a date with a THOT. I can and do have agreement with both sides of the argument.

u/lurkerhasarisen made a good point about the pretentiousness of certain restaurants and also about age and remembering when things worked a certain way. I made a comment about my grilled cheese and tomato soup date^TM.

In reality, it doesn't matter to me if I am going to 7-11, Red Lobster, or Cheesecake Factory. It doesn't matter to me if I am paying the bill, she is paying the bill, or we split the bill. What matters to me is that the woman that I have selected to accompany me for the evening is appreciative of it and by extension--ME. I am the prize. I chose her, not the other way around. I decided what I want to do for the evening, not her. I am not narcissistic, but in certain instances...fuck it, it is all about me.

If she can't get over herself enough to realize that she is the one in need of me and not the other way around; then there is the door.

If she doesn't appreciate my time or she doesn't seem interested & interesting; then there is the fucking door.

It is all about the quality of the engagement and if I am enjoying myself. Everything else...doesn't matter.

Is the value of a free meal REALLY worth spending time with someone you don't like? I would never sit through an entire meal with someone I don't like just because that person will pay for me.

But going back to the subject, Red Lobster is what a third-tier date would get at best. A first-tier date in the Chi would be blessed to get Shaw's or Joe Willie's (seafood). If you're wifing her up, then she gets to go to Bob Chinn's for crab legs and Mai-Tais...Red Lobster would be a serious step-down.

So while she's kind of right, she's the kind of trick that you just take to Long John Silvers and tell her to pay her half....
