We don't know why but there are theories.

Part of it is the fantasy though. Even had she married an alpha she might be pining for an earlier boyfriend who was less alpha because she never had to experience him warts and all. Safe to assume she forgot because she remarried and never told anyone in her family. It was news to her granddaughter as much as everyone else. The movie was illogical, it was established 20 years ago that Jack could have fit on the door. They even had physics professors chime in on it over the years. I first saw this movie in high school, on our last day of 10th grade when someone brought in a pirated vhs tape (it was still playing in theaters at the time), eventually skipped out then got caught smoking. And it's been a headache ever since.
