Remember a few things:
1 - This was your fault. Your alcoholism, your failed marriage, choosing the wrong woman or possibly choosing the right woman and fucking it up - that's on you.
2 - You aren't just the problem, you're also the solution. Keep moving forward and do so because you want a better life; never because you want to prove to her you can make it - fuck her, she's out of the picture.
3 - I have a better relationship with my kids as I am not covering up her bullshit I'm glad the relationship has improved, are they grown? If not, they are still developing and are looking at you for how they are supposed to perform as an adult.
Don't bash your wife, just nothing her. She is nothing, she gets no love or hate - she gets total apathy.
Own life man, the past is done move forward.

It is entirely my fault. I was lucky to meet a guy in AA who actually did the work. He sat me down and smacked me with a 2x4 until I understood this.
Buy that man a drink (coffee of course)
I recognize now that the only person who can help me is myself. It took a while to figure that out but alas here I am. Everything is for me right now. Even when I quit drinking it was for me. Probably the only reason it worked. And yes fuck her and anyone else that dismisses what I am doing.
Excellent work man, you're correct in that the only way life truly works is when you live it in a genuine manner.
There are many readers here who look on your story with pity and you may experience that in life as well.
I say fuck that, you took your hits and now you've reached a level some men on the manosphere will never achieve.
My kids are almost teenagers and some damage has already been done to the eldest. She does not trust her mother and did not trust me either until recently. By me doing what I am doing it confused them at first but they are happier with me because I smile now and joke rather than being Eeyore. Me doing better for myself will hopefully show them that being a door mat is not right. I do not speak about my wife to my kids and if they ask about her I am as open and honest as I can be. I don't bash my wife. We did this to ourselves. I realize that but she does not. I am polite and not at all hostile. I don't allow her to control me or my life anymore. Just last night I was working on letting the past go. Thx for the link, Forward I go!
Being a genuine dude is one of the best gifts you can not only give your kids but the best gift you can give the world.
There are too many guys who repress their masculine 'self'.
But, those who express it allow others to due the same. Either consciously or subconsciously embracing your nature lets others speak their mind a little more freely and live a little more 'real', free from the influence of expectations, the PC crowd, or society in general.
EDIT: Just realized that this was 'ThefamilyAlpha' and after reading many of your posts either you are being extremely easy on me or I'm doing something right. Thx for your reply!
I'm just a dude trying to make it as well man, your post taught me something and for that, thank you.

Your relationship with your kids is never "final," they'll go on to turn 20 and then 30 (which will fuck with your head and make you feel like a very old man by the way)
The older they get the more they can see you for what you really are. Keep working at it with them. As they mature they develop a broader perspective on their parents and, I hope, for your sake they will surprise you with their accomplishments and insights.
Good for you on getting yourself onto the right path. Stay there and help them do the same so they don't go out and fuck up themselves, other people, and the world.

Hope you've got this planned out a bit better than you've described here.
Go through your next year, then next 3. find some things that will get you closer to your desired end state (you do have an ideal outcome you're working for, right?) and find some things you know you do that would get in the way of that.
If I have to guess and /u/ex_addict_bro can confirm, is that you may be riding a high, the feeling of control, but without the requisite work. The irrational confidence is a good thing, but like a duck, you still have to paddle your ass of out of sight to ensure that you're not just going to blow this up like a red pill rambo.
Also, not sure what you're being reminded of here, other than not wanting to be co dependant.
[–]stonepimpletilists 3 points4 points5 points 9 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link
This is kind of my point, yes.
I only know what you wrote. Other than 'this time I'm certain!' it's about understanding the differences (specifically) here.
Have you talked with your lawyer yet, and has he given you the roadmap to your next 12 months?
You had to wait for her to leave the house to start planning, do you have the frame to keep on the path when it gets tough?
Do you know how you're going to get your best custodial outcome with the kids? I guarantee wifey uses the booze as a tool to kill your chances. The common wisdom here is to document your child care duties, know their ins and outs, blood type, best friends, prove that you take them to appointments, tailor your work-life enviornment to show you can raise children. We don't get a pass on being a good parent, we usually have to prove it to the courts.
Do you know what this will cost, do you have a financial roadmap to handle yourself in the meantime?
Do you have your emergency fund? How large is it? Why specifically as large as it is? Have you calculated what this will all cost, and accounted for it?

You're going to see some pretty huge gains in strength, but DO NOT skip weights doing StrongLifts at your age.
If it says to take your squat up 10 pounds, don't decide you think you can add 25. I'm your age, BTW, and I'm not trying to dog you, but... don't be careless.
Pay attention to form, too, watch the videos, etc.

[–]BobbyPeru2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link
Whoa whoa whoa. So you just swallowed the pill, and you are making a huge decision over the weekend? I'm not saying I'm against the decision to end a marriage when the time is right, but what have you done to try to right the ship that you have set off course? Have you put in the labor intensive work? A few months is hardly enough time to put in labor intensive work.
Breaking up a relationship doesn't fix codependency. Have you tried coda groups or Al-Anon?
[–]BobbyPeru1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Ok, fair enough - one last question. Have you sat diwn and discussed this with your sponsor? It sounds like you have a great one.
[–]BobbyPeru1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Corner that guy that you wanted and have a conversation with him about it. It doesn't hurt to get more than one opinion. If you approach it with an attitude of "hey, can I talk to you about something for a second?" I can almost guarantee you that he will be more than willing to listen.
[–]GargantuaBlarg29 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I agree with /u/BobbyPeru. Sounds like you are getting a lot of praise for divorce. Sounds to me like you felt the stick jiggle a bit and ejected. But you forgot that you were behind enemy lines, that you aren't equipped with survival gear or a weapon.
I have tried and tried and tried to fix this but I can't fix her.
It's not about fixing her. You fix YOU. Lead her to follow. If she does, GREAT! If she doesnt, then you can say you tried. You haven't done shit yet. You aren't fixed yet. This is the easy out...but the problem is the cause for the whole marriage failure, you, are the same.

Is Codependency No More worthy sidebar material?
[–]sh0ckley1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I found "Facing Codependence" by Pia Mellody to be the most helpful. And read all the classics.
Sidebar worthy? I'm not sure. It's for real sickos like I used to be. NMMNG covers it for the purposes of MRP imo.
Exactly. Codependence is a complex beast. I'm not sure everyone who shows up at MRP needs more than NMMNG... but I sure did. Some are sicker than others.

Whenever I see someone here that says they are codependent, I never think that their wife is also codependent. Codependent women don't send you to MRP. They annoy you until you dump them, much like a beta codependent guy getting dumped by his normal wife/gf.
Codependent guys here flock to narcissistic women and it makes perfect sense. The guy who needs someone in his life is an easy target for a woman who needs to feel like she is the most important thing in the world.
Also, codependent women don't call you out on your bluff to leave.
Your wife is either normal and you're a beta piece of shit or your wife is a narcissist (or some other form of personality disorder) and feeds off of your codependency.
If the first one, welcome to MRP, you'll do great. If the second one, you'll still do great, but your relationship is probably over.
I didn't mean "send to" in a literal sense. Narcissists are usually dependent on the codependent person, but not in the same way. It's called narcissistic supply. Obviously, I don't know your relationship, but this is just what I have seen through personal experience and on this forum. I don't meant to project those experiences onto your relationship, but it is hard not to. When I was a beta bitch I realize I had some pretty codependent traits and realized a few women I had dated were pretty narcissistic, beyond AWALT. Narcissists can be addicts as well.

you also might just be a shitty man and women act like this when they are unattracted in general. but it is something to keep in mind. work on yourself as long/hard as possible and then reexamine her behavior to see if it still fits this criteria. some people are just broken. but this is really the "odd case out," rather than the rule. it's a favorite of guys on here to say that their wife fits these profiles when they really don't. so just keep that in mind, because it can be an easy way to not own the situation and your personal failures and you don't want that.
but as i mentioned earlier, narcissists are attracted to codependents, so it may be right. if you're so sure there is probably no point in fixing her. you just need to work on yourself, maybe give her a chance to follow, however I wouldn't hold any expectations.

A speaker tape I was listening to recently defined alcoholism as the restless, irritable discontent feeling that causes the compulsion to drink. A lot of my alcoholic and codependant behavior was seeking things outside myself to make me feel better and relieve that restless irritable, discontent feeling that I relieved with alcohol before I got sober. At the beginning of every meeting we read the pertinent idea (b) That probably no human power could have relieved our alcoholism. For me, women and money are probably the two main human powers I have used to try to relieve my alcoholism. As a consequence, women and people giving me money (bosses mostly) totally dominated me via my compulsion to control them, like the actor running the whole show. In steps 4 through 9 I see how I have been angry, fearful, dependent on and controlling of women (among others) and take actions to straighten out the past and stop this pattern. With MRP principles I see clearly the weakness in this dependence on women and learn a new way.

Okay. Welcome.
It looks, to me, like you have become aware that the Disney princess ideal marragie - the happily ever after with no work - is a lie.
Good.
It also looks like you have discovered the right place.
And that you have not read it all, nor do you understand all the principles, but you are READING and LIFTING.
Keep reading, keep lifting.
Right now, learn the basics. Simple stuff like acta, non verbal. Three examples:
1) ACTA, NON VERBA
"I told my wife that I am not suffering through her bullshit for another 5 years expecting everything to be OK ... I detached successfully and told her I wanted out of the marriage ... I only speak to her about my children and nothing else."
---> Right now she sees you as a low-value man. Expect every ultimatum to be responded to with her genuinely believing it is a get out of jail card.
Now realize that she is your sparring partner, not your soulmate. Why TELL her you plan to leave? Dude, she can plan to build a narrative against you. She can now see a lawyer first. She can drive the bus.
I would STFU about all relationship stuff with her, good and especially bad. Hopefully she assumes your idle threat was an idle threat. Then GET BUSY. Work on yourself. Get yourself back in good physical shape. Work on your diet. Become the kind of person people want to be around. Enjoy the kids. If and when you decide to punch out, DO IT. Don't threaten or do some passive-agressive "I'm not talking to you" game. Which leads me to #2.
2) MRP MEN ARE FUN
"I detached successfully and told her I wanted out of the marriage ... I only speak to her about my children and nothing else."
Dude, MRP men are fun. We have awesome lives. We get stuff done. People want to be around us. We project strong, positive energy, so much that distance is a form of punishment.
Not at first. Most have an anger stage. That's what STFU is for. Change the subject, don't be butthurt, talk about something else.
My point: Don't distance your wife and punish you. You are not valuable enough yet (in her eyes, or, given your alcoholism, probably in yours) for that to be a punishment. Instead, be fun and positive. If you do divorce in 12 months, she'll feel like she is losing something. That won't happen if you are strategically tactically no fun guy.
I'm not saying pursue her. I'm saying when you're in the room, you're fun. If you have to fake it, fake it.
I REALLY struggle with this right now. I grok it intellectually, and yet being in the same room with ConstantlyAngryPerson (TM) (C) (R) it's hard to stay positive and fun.
3) Stay Married for a bit while you figure stuff out
Don't rush to file papers. Work on yourself. Get out of her frame. Work on yourself. Build your own life.
Next Steps for you
The next step is probably to understand these things above as problems and mistakes, intellectually. Over time, the time it dawns on you that you did a BluePillMisDeed will shrink. Eventually, you'll recognize it while you are making the decision, in time to make the RedPill Decision. Hopefully, the RedPill option will become habit.
I hope that helps.
Welcome, man. AskMRP is the right place for now, I think. Continue to post here and if you want to be challenged the next step up (which is really just make plans and keep them) consider the OYS thread on /r/marriedredpill
