I’d never cut on 5/3/1 - I ran it during my bulk and then went RPT during my cut.

I just wrote a plan for Fitchick which is a 5/3/1. I think it is sexy, not to mention productive when women lift with a plan such as 5/3/1. More females like you and Fitchick need to lift heavy shit.

I think cutting another 15 is a good idea. Just make sure you dont loose your ass in the process. Air fucks and squats are your friend.

Keep an eye on breast size as well. All women carry their weight in different areas.

After stalling on 5x5, RPT during a cut worked great for me. Just make sure you’re hitting the protein needs. I targeted 1.2x per lb of weight.

Do you all skip every other day like strong lift recommends or lift daily?

Three days per week doesnt seem like a lot

Most people have this shit backwards truthfully.

So strong lifts like 5/3/1 and 5x5s make you stronger, increases you lifts like a power lifter.

Here's the thing though.. look at olympic power lifters. Most of them look like strong fat dudes.

High reps doesn't do much for strength but it does for hypertrophy (or growth) of your muscles.

It's best to cycle between the 2 approaches to keep your muscles confused. If your muscles adapt to a program then the progress stalls.

But in the end... High Rep Sets = hypertophy and strong lifts increase strength. It's not that either approach won't help both goals, but that is what each approach is intended for and clearly better at.

Note this advice is for natural lifters. if you are cycling gear, you can do whatever the fuck you want and it will still work and work well

Don’t cut. I made this mistake over and over again. I was skinny fat too. You need mass. Bulk and make it as clean as possible. Abs on a skinny guy are like tits on a fat chick. Once you actually have some muscle and strength then by all means cut.

5 x 5 until you stall, usually happens after 3 months or so. Then switch to 531 if that’s what you want to do next. Also follow the programs as they are intended to be run. The rest days are important.

5/3/1 will spur muscle growth. More muscle = more calories burned (usually). The idea is that you burn calories during the lifts themselves, more calories burned (used) in recovery (when your body is healing all the microtears in the muscles that causes them to get bigger), and more to maintain the muscle mass.

So, in theory, the more muscle you put on, the more calories you are burning just to maintain the muscle....on top of what you burn during the lift and recovery stages.

I never had the test done, but a buddy of mine did. In a nutshell, it told him how many calories he would burn per day if he sat on the couch and did absolutely nothing. 4500 calories was where he was at, just to sit on the couch and not lift a finger. He was also 250+ lbs. at around 18% bf. But you get the idea.

Also, body type and metabolism varies person to person. Part of this is whether your body goes for fat reserves or muscle first when in a caloric deficit. Just some knowledge for you to play around with and see how your body reacts.

What are your lifts now? The basic 531 templates do not progress fast enough for new lifters, even if you were on a severe calorie deficit.

Also how fat are you? Like someone said abs don't count when you're a skinny guy, but starting a bulk when your bodyfat is too high is a terrible idea as well.

My opinion is it is going to take a long time to build enough muscle to look good with a spare tire, but only a relatively short period of time to lose the spare time.

Then again I'm such a small dude I look alright at only 150lbs

The fitness sub has a good wiki that lists a bunch of different strength programs. Here’s a link. I’m currently running the 4-day nSuns program and love it.

The thing is you can spend days researching the best workout routine but the truth is it doesn’t matter that much in the beginning. I think eating, sleeping, form and consistency are the things to focus on. Find a program you like doing and be consistent with it. Eat a lot of protein as others have suggested. Sleep at least 8 hours every night. And work on your form so you don’t get injured.

I agree with others not to cut right off the bat. I worked up to two plates and am now cutting and it fucking sucks. It’s demoralizing to work your ass off and watch your lifts go nowhere. For me it would have been hard to do this when starting out.

Dude. Slow the cut. Add 300 cals at least and boost a few reps. Concentrate on the load to you for the tear and burn. And, concentrate on hitting your macros

Skinny fat should be worked into “build and strip”. Seriously. If you just started on 5x5 three months ago, there is a lot of ducking threshold you can push before you change routines.

If your skinny put the muscle on slowly, and kill the fat at the same time. You can avoid the viscous cycle of bulk/cut

There is a lot of good advice here. Vett it well, if you are on gear just keep ducking pushing. If you aren’t, push and get some quality rest.

Thanks for the advice bros.

After reading all of your input, I am going to get down to 145ish lbs sticking with 5x5 and then transition to bulking and 5/3/1.
