Keep it simple. The goal is not to be butthurt. So if she's there, just a quick "I'm running out!" Key is avoid DEER. An alpha man doesn't justify what he's doing, but he is clear to the crew what his mission is.

Early in keep it simple, tell her you're running to Home Depot or something for a last minute project.

I had this same problem when I first started out. I never went out on my own and honestly didn't have much to do. It was very unnatural and screamed of pouty butthurt and was not very effective at first. My advice would be to develop independent hobbies and past times that you do even when she's not being a bitch. Going to the gym was an easy one at first, I also started going to the gun range and going to local bars to watch sports.

Basically, it helps if you establish yourself as an independent person before she starts getting shitty, so it looks more natural and less butthurt when you do just want to remove yourself from her. That's not to say you can't do other stuff now, just something to think about.

I have enough shit to do that I never need an excuse to go somewhere and can make it productive.

You also want her to put the two and two together (I'm being ugly...he's not around) for it to stick better.

And just as a side note...because I comment on this so much... it may read like I leave at the drop of the hat from my comments. But I'd like to point out I usually try to lighten the mood with a.m. first. I like giving anybody the option to choose a good mood. Cheering up a wife comes with the territory. But I'll leave at the first sign of shitty-tude being turned on me as a stress relief or wantonly wanting to wallow in grump. We're not emotional tampons.

And also to be fair if I recognize I'm in a bad mood, and it's becoming apparent it's coloring my family's mood or I'm just being jerky, I may remove to somewhere else until >I< get over whatever it is.
