To avoid getting fat don't focus on what you are not eating. Focus on what you are eating. Eat a plate of broccoli/veggies a day.

Can you get in a pool after the surgery? If you can then swim, very low spine load in the pool. Weights are on hold until surgeon says you are cleared. Can’t lift weights without loading the spine. Do not fuck up the surgery. Spine fusions cause enough problems afterward. Do not be the guy who gets 3-4 more surgeries if you can help it.

Watch what you eat and get your calories dialed in and you shouldn’t get fat.

Focus on diet while you’re waiting to get back into lifting. Diet will do more for you getting lean than lifting will so you can still be working on getting the BF% down. Take it as an opportunity to learn to eat really cleanly and focus 100% on it.

Get an opinion from a sports medicine doc. Every injury, every surgery, most docs tell you not to lift. They're not always right. And even then there are a shit ton of lifts that don't engage the erector spinae. Can you squat heavy? Probably not. Still a ton you can do, if you're serious and already a lifter now.

All of the above presumes you've been lifting for awhile though. If you're just getting started and you're still a noob and a fat fuck, leave it alone, and take some of the other advice here about swimming, other cardio, and diet for the time being. People just starting out, especially later in life, tend to overtrain at first and fuck themselves up, especially in this sub, so if that's where you're at, listen to your doc.

If you're already an athlete, though, find somebody who treats athletes.
