You need a barbell, dumbbells and cardio machines. Either of those will work, I use the Y (close To my work) and a cheap PF (close to home) membership. Picking a good program is essential as well.

Either one of those gyms will be an upgrade from the bow flex because they will have dumbbells at minimum. Barbells are a bonus (smith machines do not count).

Since they aren’t conveniently located and you mentioned building a rack set up, you can probably find and buy kettlebells and/or dumbbells + a bench on Craigslist to start your home gym.

I use Anytime Fitness. So the deal is you can use any location, not just the one you sign up at. What I have found is that there is quite a bit of variation at what each location has. I think each one is a franchise. My current one has a bunch of squat racks and 2 deadlift platforms- I never wait to lift. I recently was traveling and visited a different location and was disappointed at their setup. I would go to Anytime and see if they have everything you would need. Also, visit at the time you would likely be working out so you get a sense of how crowded it is.

Nothing says you have to drop 2k on a rack system. Dicks sporting goods have sets that are relatively cheap that will work just fine ($300 to $600) or about 4 months of a gym membership. Get you started at least and you can sell it when you want to upgrade. Spend your money on a good bar and weights that will last a lone times.

You can also do a lot with rings, kettle bell and dumbbells.

The basics of lifting heavy includes:

barbell
plates
squat rack/stands

You can literally buy the equipment used and put it in an area of your home if need be. Using a boxflex doesn't force you to learn proper form and move up the weight properly that plates give you. I have always had a home gym or a gym in a place that I was living/staying in for work. Find a proper weight lifting gym or get going on your own. Re/endthread.

Barbells, dumbells, bench, squat rack, chinup bar and dip belt or some other way of weighting chinupa. If it has those, you’re good.

Planet fitness has no barbells only smith machines & dumbbells, I rec anytime fitness - although lifting is a solo activity, if you're somewhat social you can make a gym friend or 2. Alternatively buy a used rack and weights online, there are some very good deals out there, esp after the covid boom.

If you’re really short of resources I recommend Never Let Go by Dan John. Sandbag carries, asymmetric lifting, etc. Not ideal, but a good start.

If you can afford the gym membership and the gas to get to/from a gym that's out of your way, then I'm sure you can afford to finance a home set up. Find a credit card offering an introductory 0% interest rate, buy what you need, and set aside $150/month to pay it off.
