Hello! I'm currently a student at a university and I just recently started trying this cold apporach thing out. I always wanted to be a more social person so I figured may as well do it in a fun way too. I mean what's the worst that can happen .... right? ... lol
Just today I was able to make one of my first apporaches on campus. I saw this asian girl walking down and I decided this was it - no excuses. In the past I would always bail last moment but I guess today I had like 10 seconds of stupid amount of courage.
I dont have the confidence to do the Yada stop or whatever it's called so I wanted a more easy/natural intercation. We were both in the same sidewalk and headed in the same direction. I walked to the side of her ensuring there was a large gap and also like 2-3 steps in front of where she was and just casually turned my head. And I said "hey, how are you?" She had earbuds on so she took them off and sort of just looked at me confused. Again I just sort of repeated "hey, how's it going, I like your jacket, looks very comfy". I forget what she said but she was like "oh" with maybe a nervous/forced laugh. With up and down hand motions I said "it's pretty long too, much longer than mine, do you like longer ones?"
I just kept walking with her and made small talk. Eventually she was like "do I know you" or somethig along that line. I responded "oh don't worry you're not going crazy, I dont think we've met, i just thought you were cute so I wanted to say hi, chat a bit". From there I asked her what her name was and gave her mine. Went for a handshake during the introduction to which she didn't really go for. Conversation continued, we walked a bit since we were both heading to same direction and then we separated. I asked if she wanted to hangout to which she said very awkwardly "no".
Now I was actually pretty happy about this apporach because I was able to actually apporach someone for once with no excuses. And I didn't think I was very creepy or anything of the sort. I even thought it was pretty good and looked similar to some infield footage I've seen in YouTube when the guy just very casually starts a conversation by pointing out some clothing article.
But fast forward like a few, there's a post in my college's subreddit titled "Don't try to make friends this way" when she just anonymously describes the interaction we had. She left out the hitting on part and just framed it as a dude just randomly apporached her and started talking to her like they knew each other. And how that overstepped her boundaries or something like that and made her uncomfortable. To be honest I'm not sure what she meant by that. Boundaries as in "I don't talk to strangers"? Like I didn't do anything other than just make small talk.
Clearly this wasent my intention and honestly now I'm felling pretty shitty haha. I'm wondering did I do this in a bad way? Like fuck what i did was so similar to successful infields ive seen - I even thought I did pretty good. Or is this something I should just ignore because I know some people are just going to against cold apporach in general. I want to learn from this if possible.
Some of my thoughts were:
Maybe I could have gave my name earlier in the interaction and said the "I thought you looked cute ..." line earlier. Perhaps that would have made it easier for her to be comfortable. But also I'm not sure because again I've seen cases where people don't exchange names or show intent ("super random i know, but i just thought you looked cute ..." etc) so I feel like that is also a valid way of doing things.
Another thought. During the interaction i just thought the girl was shy so I didnt think much of her awkward reactions. I think in the future if the girl seems nervous I should try to make it very clear that I'm like not trying to do anything shady. I remember seeing a video where a guy was like "don't worry I'm not trying to sell you anything or convert you to another religion, just thought you looked cute so I wanted to say hi".
I really liked the sort of natural conversation frame so I tend to go for that a lot but im starting to realize that mabye I should scrap that frame immediately if the girl seems very shy/quite/scared since I don't really know if it's just shes "shy" or it's more "scared".
I would appreciate some constructive feedback. I dont really need another person shitting on me, telling me I'm a creep - much more interested in the why. Like I genuinely didn't think my apporach was strange. Is it just the girl? Maybe I was just unlucky and she was super sensitive/had past trauma or something?
