That's a women giving you generalized advice, if you want specific examples ask. Men who have bad social skills shouldn't get then get mad and blame women for "bad advice" and decide they all give bad advice. Being nice and being yourself isn't even wrong, it's just not specific and you have to do that in a context of social awareness and social skills.
You're generalizing all women as unhelpful in that area. You should probably treat women like individuals and say "the advice I've been given hasn't been specific enough to be helpful while I relate to men more or something like that." I don't see women as the same, and I'm not speaking from anecdotal experience. In the pick-up and seduction community it's a pretty commonly known thing that you don't ask women for advice on pick-up, the best person to go for advice is a guy who is good at it.
Sure there may be some women who can share some good advice, but it's better to go to a guy who is successful at it himself. Pick-up strategy was developed by men learning and practicing seduction, not women teaching men how to seduce them.

I just went to my local Walmart to pick up some Apple Cider Vinegar and a new whiteboard and when I was leaving back into the parking lot to get to my car I saw her cute ass walking out too, and I had about 15 feet between us. I had saw that there was a car parked terribly holding two spots and instantly I said, "Please telll me that wasn't you" she looked at me then look at the car and started laughing and said, "uhh uhh that wasn't me I'm over here."
I then proceeded to went over taking off my mask smiling at her and just said, "Hey my names Matthew I just thought you were cute so I had to come and talk to you someway." She laughed and said her name and I asked her to tell me her life story in the next 2 minutes.
Now I know a Walmart parking lot isn't like the most ideal place to pick up girls, and if you're not careful you can come off as creepy or harassment. But shooters shoot! So what I did to combat this was just
-Have open arms (open arms =friendly behavior, they can see your hands)
- took my mask off and smile with my mouth eyes (Smiling is a great way to flirt and show friendliness)
-Tonality ( Loud and confident, in a joking manner when I asked her if that was her parking job)
-Reading her. (If her bodies not facing towards me she's or avoiding eye contact and turning her back, than those are obvious signs she aint feeling me lmao)
So ultimately we had talked and she goes to a college nearby, we both like the Mavs and we had a good conversation a lot of laughing and smiling about what she wanted to do in life! So when I walked her back to her car I pulled my phone out and said put your number in my phone, she smiled and put it in!
I then asked to take a picture, this was when she gave me a look and asked,"why?" I could tell she was a bit skeptical.
I told her, "it's to show our kids the first day we met"
She laughed and smiled and said ok.
Now ultimately I've been feeling a little rusty in cold approach, and it was stressing me a little bit. I know a lot of others feel similarly here in the subreddit so I thought It'd be valuable to share my story.
I think meeting a girl in person is still the strongest way to meet a girl, it trumps dating apps imo. Ultimately what was going thru in my mind when I asked her because I too had a little bit of social approach anxiety was, "Hey what's the worst that could happen?" "If she aint feeling me I can just walk away and say hey have a wonderful day!"
But I would hate my not approaching her and cowering away at the opportunity to approach a girl especially if it's been bothering me and I've been a little skeptical about approach lately! That fear would annoy me more than getting rejected! "If it isn't going to matter in the next 5 years, do it." That's the quote I live by!

The women in the pic is NOT relaxed. If you were having a great conversation and she felt comfortable she would not have gotten into the car and put her hands on the steering wheel. You should not hover in a women's car window. I think it's a matter of how you can read the person and if they are respectful enough to read you and your body language is your uncomfortable.
I live in a really small town and feel relatively safe. Yeah, I'd be cautious. But you also have to think the main way people are dating is meeting randoms online. You're going out and meeting perfect stranger sometimes from a different town or area. Yeah, you can build a report via texting or calling, but it's so easy to lie and get a false sense of intimacy. How is that any safer?

It all depends on the interpersonal dynamic. It's not the approach I have an issue with, approaching a women the way he did and getting her number is fine! But a setting like that you have to make it quick don't hold her hostage in her car. She isn't relaxed chatting with him, otherwise she wouldn't have gotten in her car.

It may not have been depending on delivery and body language and her responses, but generally. I think if this had happened at a bar it would have been fine! They're in a social setting, normal to take pics, normal to ask about someone's life. But someone in their car ready to leave Walmart? Just get their number and get out of there.
I've had random guys ask to take pics of me or with me in public while I'm walking down the street or outside a store at an outdoor mall and I always assume they're trying to jerk off to it later or reverse image search it or who knows what. I will agree that the asking for a picture is a little weird, but what do you think guys from dating apps are doing with your pics? They can just screenshot it and do all the same things. Also, we don't know that she was in her car the whole time trying to escape. As she was getting in, he could have just dropped the 'hey take a pic'. The second feels like an invasion of privacy

this is a solid question, bro I use to be that one guy who would stand in the middle of Walmart and try and get strangers to sign up for cable services lol! So I'd talk to like 150-200 people a day on the regular and did that for two years, so I pretty much had zero fucking approach anxiety. Then Covid happened I lost my license for my job, stayed inside for a couple of months and the masks and social distancing didn't make it a free flowing people meeting people environment I was so accustomed too. I just had to get my sauce back and get the juices running, I'm not necessarily afraid of approaching women, I'm more in fear of that, "oh shit, here's a chance for me to prove if I still got it or if im ready to get back into the dating world" and if I blow that chance or not. Confidence too me is everything, and I think with confidence you can solve about 80% of your dating problems (sorry for the novel)
