Great advice. I agree that doing things rather than just thinking will force you to take your mind off whatever was frustrating you. Engaging with people (no motive in mind) is a nice one.

You hit it on the nail right there.

This works the best for me. I was just friend zoned this morning and I felt like shit right after. about an hour after it happened I was talking to my dad about it and I felt a lot better after that. Then I decided I would just go out and do something so I went clothes shopping. Without even thinking about it I was chatting up one of the girls who worked at the shop and found myself using some game; it was completely natural. Nothing became of it but I'm already over my rotten luck from this morning and its not even 9PM.

I don't try to hide it. If someone asks what's wrong, I'll tell them in a brief summary. I don't wear my emotions on my sleeve, but I'm not a lockbox, either. It's a great way for people to show that they care about you and it makes for great conversation, especially if you approach your problems sanely.

It just feels like, for the next couple hours, wherever you are, you become oblivious to people and opportunities around you because you're wallowing in your frustrations.
[–]seydar 0 points1 point2 points 15 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I would have to become oblivious at some point, though. I either bottle everything up, which is no good, or I don't. But shit's not black and white, so I have to find the middle ground.

It's all about diversifying. You don't want to have all your eggs in one basket with women or with happiness.
If you find validation in many areas simultaneously -- e.g. athletics, business, art, women, what have you -- no slump can take you down.
That is true, but some baskets are bigger than others, such as for example looking for a job or looking to get a top-notch score on an exam. These baskets are supposed to be heavier, and although there may be many, some baskets are easily discarded whereas others are not. The abundance mentality, such as is the case with chasing women, only works for some things. I agree with your point about diversifying your worth in many areas, just like with stocks/financial investments for example, and looking at that bigger picture is something I need to work on. Just taking a step back and observing everything from a distance for a few seconds so you can get right back out there and get interested in things and people around you rather than waste the present day thinking about the past failures.

What does "Supposed to be" mean? Supposed to be according to whom?
[–]famousmodification 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's a damn good question.
I haven't been able to manage fixing it instantly yet, but I've found that recognizing your poor state of mind usually helps. Other than that, I throw on some upbeat music and try to pump myself up, but it's hard to pull yourself out of a rut. I was kind of in one yesterday, and the main thing that got me out of it was seeing a ~8 month old lab trying to chase a rabbit.

Music does help, and actually realizing and thinking about what happened, why it happened, and how you can solve it shows some determination and courage in the face of (current) defeat. It's just the risk of getting sucked into thinking about it at the wrong time and everyone and everything else around you is not worth looking into.

I asked a similar question a few weeks ago.
Sometimes you're just down. We're human, it happens. Sometimes its a bunch of little things, sometimes someone hits an emotional trigger, sometimes stress gets to us. There's no rhyme or reason to it. The best thing you can do is just keep telling yourself it's temporary. If it is not temporary (if it lasts longer than a couple weeks), you might want to talk to someone. Everyone gets the downers from time to time, but if it's a long stretch, talk to a friend or parent and maybe consider seeing a mental health professional.

Thinking in terms of "I failed that test, oh shit! I'm going to fail this class now!" or "I don't have a job yet and all my friends do what the fuck am I going to do?!" Is an inherently low self-esteem outlook on life. The point of seddit is to make your frame of mind better, which will in turn make your life better. Someone who is in the right frame will not worry about a bad test or not getting a job offer, they will just be confident that things will eventually go right and keep working accordingly.
Anxiety, frustration and stress are three things that stop people from putting themselves out there. Lose these traits as much as possible, do not fear failure. Have the mindset that things will work out for you.
When you do this, you stop handicapping yourself with a bombardment of all these negative feelings that fuck up your confidence and your life. If I bomb a test (which I often did), my mindset should be all about calibrating.
"I just failed the shit out of this test I took, could have been in chinese. I studied all the wrong stuff. No big deal, but I'm probably going to take this Thursday night off and learn this shit so I don't get caught off guard again."
Will Always Yield Better Results Than
"I'm so fucked, I'm going to fail this class. I'm such an idiot! I don't know what to do. I have to like talk to the professor or something, I don't know! I'm freaking out! Why does this shit happen to me!?"
This is true of life in general, not just pick up.

Maybe it's just natural, but I always have positive self-talk.
Had a shitty day or encounter? Good thing I'm a total bad ass. Women can't resist this handsome Italian pimp-shit.
Stuff like that helps me.
I accept that it's a shitty period. I also accept that it is just part of the cycle that has been happening non stop in my life but I realize that the shitty parts are getting fewer and farther in between.

methamphetamines help.

Drugs are a terrible idea, they just mask the problem.

Tequila seems to work.
