I have had this same problem, and just tell them I am the only one that knows the answer to that, and the only one that will ever know the answer to that. Then go on by saying what is in the past is in the past, ex's are ex's for a reason, and that the only thing important right now is me and you. Seems to work pretty well.

I'd either:

Smile and say, "A gentlemen never tells"
Tell her if she can guess it right first time (+/- 1 each side), I'll tell her she's right
Just tell her the number

In my pre PUA days I actually got blown out over this. I was 19 and had slept with 3 people. When the girl asks I tell her the truth, and she's like, "OMG I'm 17 and have already slept with 15 people. You're no good". And that was it. Slag.

You could say "I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours, and ask her first."

Naturally she'll probably lie, and lowball it, and you can say something more than her within an acceptable range.

But honestly, its none of her business, I like "Please, allow a guy some modesty," the best. What matters more is that you're clean and have been tested. If she asks about that, tell her the truth, I think in that case, she has a right to know.

You're answer is fine. Never tell the truth. Always be vague. If you say too much, the girl will most times feel used and dirty.

In the past I have either been vague like you, or have completely blown the number wayyy up and sarcastically say something like, "Oh probably been with a couple thousand girls by now, I'm like Warren Beaty, got girl for every night, which one do you want? Don't pick Tuesday through Sunday, those are taken :)" Basically, just keep messing with them until they give up, but definitely don't answer the real number.

The thing is, you're not even allowed to ask women. For most, asking their sex number is like asking their age. So why should you have to answer it?

There's nothing to be ashamed about as long as you make sure they know that they're different. Also, if they ask in an indignant way, they usually don't expect a number, so you can say "a couple people" or "a fair amount" without problems. People will then usually assume 1-2 more than their "reasonable number" (which tends to be around 8-9, typically)
