This was prepandemic. I was in an Asian supermarket last year. Saw this cute girl promoting Sapporo beer. I walked up to her and struck a conversation.

Me: We don't have to order alcohol. Sake will do ( I gave her a soft smile as I nodded my head upward and wined).

Then I surrendered my phone to her and got her #. I looked at her # then confirmed her name out loud. Ashley, im Peter. it's a pleasure talking to you. I'll talk to you soon (as I gave her a big smile). Enjoy the rest of the weekend Then I slowly carried on with my shopping.

Asking about a purse may stick out on the wrong team. It'd work better with something like "Hey, weird question but can I know where to get that purse? My cousin/friend/etc showed me a picture of it and really wants it, but I am clueless on purses. Her birthday is coming up."

Non-confrontational approach and if she opens up and shares/talks then you have a good clue she at least hasn't written you off.

I look at approaches as if I at least leave with a new friend that is cool too. Some of those friends end up being able to set you up with their other friends or if things change you end up on a booty call list at 1am after a bad break up :)
