I see so many guys focus on “being better than the other guy” that they tunnel vision on the “competition”. They focus on what others are doing so much that they lose focus on the reality of the situation: no healthy relationship, romantic or platonic, is a competition. If you had to compete to be someone’s friend, that’s not even friendship.

So quit worrying what other people are doing. Worry about who you are and who you want to be. Master that, and you’ll find someone who wants to be with you.
