Finally something simple for the people that are terrible at opening.
[–]doriangreat 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Seriously, everyone on here tells you to "just approach and be confident" ...like the right words are just gonna come to you as your throat dries up, your knees get weak, and your brain is screaming at you to run away.
Hope I helped some people out with mine.

Want to ask her how many hours she can work a week and what she can bring to the company?
I'm just kidding, I like the "What's your story?" question, that's good.
I'm not usually this outgoing. How about you? Although I don't like using the phrase, this can be perceived as a DHV.
The others seem just too interview-y. Have you heard of a concept called conversation thread? Cavitycreep posted a really good article on it, it's a really powerful and simple technique, that's not exactly manipulative and rehearsed like half of the stuff you'll read on these PUA forums. I'd give it a read.
Conversation threading
[–]doriangreat 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I agree, this is something I need to work on. I know all about conversation threading, but I have trouble with openers.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've found in college as far as the first 5 weeks have gone just asking a girl about her major isn't too interviewy and also natural, although I think that in a few weeks it won't be as acceptable.
[–]ntgbox 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You and every college guy ever.
[–][deleted] 47 points48 points49 points 13 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link
Leave out the "I'm sorry to bother you".
[–]c0ckmasterz 15 points16 points17 points 13 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link
Why?
[–][deleted] 32 points33 points34 points 13 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link
Its needy. Your mindset should be that you arent bothering her and that she will enjoy your interaction.
[–]doriangreat 13 points14 points15 points 13 years ago (16 children) | Copy Link
Good point. I feel like I need to replace it with something, though. ""Hi, you're really cute and I'd be kicking myself all day if I didn't come say hi to you" Sounds like I'm commenting on her rather than talking to her.
[–][deleted] 15 points16 points17 points 13 years ago* (9 children) | Copy Link
"Hi, you're really cute and I'd be kicking myself all day if I didn't come say hi to you"
That sounds perfectly fine. Also, if you want a good solid IOI, don't introduce yourself ever. Wait til she asks your name. It's a solid sign she is content talking to you. If you're losing her, she generally won't ask, and will try to eject frequently.
[–]-Fearless- 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
I agree that her asking you for your name is a great IOI. But I think that the benefit of her comfort in you being less of a stranger (once you introduce yourself early in the interaction) is more valuable.
In addition, I know that some girls don't show a ton of personality, but honestly, it's not that hard to tell if a girl is enjoying her interaction with you. Has she smiled? Has she laughed? Is she touching your hair? Has she asked you any questions? Has she turned away from you the second there's a pause in the conversation? Has she touched you? My point is that there are so many other IOI's that I don't believe this one is worth the risk of seeming a "stranger."
[–]CodeNameAcme 3 points4 points5 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Is she touching MY hair? If so I think it's safe to say she has indicated her interest, I'll be going for the F-close out back by the dumpster now.
[–]-Fearless- 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
yeah typo but good luck with the dumpster-fuck. Might want to wear a rubber..suit.

I can't think right now, but go watch one of Sasha Daygame's videos, he always starts with a variation of this statement.
Or you could go for an opinion opener. "Hey my friend and I could never settle this [Insert two opinions for her to choose here]". It's just an ice breaker. The "you're cute" is better because it doubles as a statement of intentions though.
[–][deleted] 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Then you know what to do! Don't be shy, get out there!
[–]smokeshack 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't like leading with a physical compliment. She doesn't know you at all, and already you're telling her you want to sleep with her--your game had better be tight, or it's going to blow up on you. Focus on what she wants, not what you want. Comment on what she's doing right now, not what you want to do with her later.
"Wow, that's a huge laundry basket! Are you washing for all your evil stepsisters?"
"It's rare to see other people under 60 in the jazz section. Do you play?"
"You look like you're in a good mood! What did you win?"
[+]Austanyo -6 points-5 points-4 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
How about "Hi, I don't mean to bother you, but..." It doesn't sound needy and it flows better.
[–]-Fearless- 6 points7 points8 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
"I'm sorry" and the words "bother" and "annoy" are all reinforcing the idea that she is somehow better than you. And she is not.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Maybe "hope im not bothereing u"? Same thing but it gets rid of the 'i dont mean to" which still sounds like an apology
[–]kcinaz 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
How about " I'm normally not so forward".
Even better
[–]Tortheldrin 9 points10 points11 points 13 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I like to say a joke before I ask her questions. Something to get her smiling. I hate getting answers with no emotion in them. it's intimidating.
[–][deleted] 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
[–]Tortheldrin -2 points-1 points0 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I really can't give you a joke right off the spot like this. If you mean an example of how I get an answer with no emotion in them: (I was going to type something else, but it's basically this) Getting yes/no answers. If I'm having a good time, I'm going to talk. i'm not going to say 'yeah. I find that fun'. I'm going to tell you why I find it fun.
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
If she responds with something negative or insulting, say "Well you were cute until you opened your mouth. Have a good day!"
This kind of butthurt reaction is exactly what we want to avoid while learning seduction. One of the cardinal rules of seduction is to remain nonreactive. So if a girl ever gives you a bad attitude for approaching, the key is to plow through like she never even said anything. Don't acknowledge it at all, just continue on with your charming banter. If she still gives you a negative reaction, then just say:
"Have a good day"
The reasoning behind all this is because: 1. Being reactive is always beta. Throwing insults only brings you down to a lower, non-value giving level. And 2, when you remain cool after she acts like that, she might just realize how rude she was and apologize to you as you calmly walk away. "Hey, sorry I was being a bitch, I've had a long day.. blah blah blah", giving you the floor to further the conversation.

Oh sod off, it feels good to not be afraid to talk back to a pretty girl that thinks she has the right to give you shit just for saying a friendly hi to a stranger. Nothing 'beta' about having standards like that if you ask me.
Then again, general friendliness (including to strangers) is one of the qualities that I look for in a girl. Setting your 'criterea' beyond 'hot' is another one of the typical seduction lessons, and maybe how important we find this one is where we differ.
I agree that it's a bit harsh of a reaction though, I'm sure there's a way to phrase it in a more tongue-in-cheek way while still delivering the same message.
(the irony of being 'reactive' myself here is not entirely lost on me :))
[–]paulgualtieri 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Drop "by the way." Just say your name. You don't need to make it seem insignificant. Who you are is significant. You're the man! ;)

Here's something I learned from Mark Manson: You can't be afraid to polarize women. I agree that your post sounds too deferential.
By polarize, Mark means that if she likes you, then she's really going to want you to sit with her. If she doesn't like you, then she's really going to not want you to sit with her.
So stop being afraid. You're trying to avoid that risk, but it is exactly that risk which women find the most attractive in guys. You need to be willing to put yourself out there. She's just a girl.
Unnecessary, and very beta. If you care this much about her response, then you have a lot of inner game work to do. Her insulting you should just roll off you.
I'm not usually this outgoing. How about you?
DLV. Also, avoid the interview stuff.
[–]Arigot 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ask open-ended questions. They allow you to learn much more about the person than if you ask a "closed" question, because then they're allowed to answer however they want and that can tell you a lot.
We had an Interpersonal Communication class at my university, and the professor gave this example: "Say you meet somebody who lives in Flowermound (a city in Texas). Don't ask them something like 'Oh, do you like the mall there?' because that'll just end with them saying yes or no, and it doesn't progress anything. Instead you can ask them if they like living there, and if they say yes, ask them what they like about living there. If they say the mall, now I know they like shopping. If they mention the airport, now I know they probably like traveling. Etc."
I'd say the more you can do this, the better. It also helps the conversation feel more fluid, which is obviously important. For that reason, I love the "what's your story?" line and have used it a bunch myself, since it allows the person to respond how they'd like to and is a very effective way for opening up multiple branches of conversation.

you're really cute
Now, see, the problem is that there's no decent way to translate this to my language without sounding like a total jackass :( There's no 'cute' way like that of saying a girl looks, well, beautiful.
(Dutch from Belgium btw)
But Thanks for sharing this! I'd love to see more of things like this, 'universal fallbacks'.** I think mine would be to start talking about the fact that strangers are so afraid of each other and they don't dare to connect, and I think we should not give in to that and talk.

Don't be afraid to push the conversation a bit until she opens up. "blah blah blah I'm here studying whatever" before you ask "what are you studying"
[–]wtk 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
You don't put out hand to shake her hand first. S a v o i r - v i v r e ? :P
[–]iwenttocharlenes 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Overall, I think your attitude is a bit too deferential. You are not lucky to sit with her, she is lucky to sit with you. Don't be arrogant, but when you ask if you can sit with her, you have to act like you know she's going to say yes. Otherwise she feels like she has a greater ability to say no, and she probably will if your delivery is the way most people would say "sorry to bother you..." and such things.
[–]NomzillaShaw 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's very true, you're essentially deciding for her. While what you say is completely circumstantial, slipping in a "...hey let's take a seat" while conversing about something is simple. If you hit an common interest you want to delve into... you're making it easy for both you and her!
If that doesn't work you could always resort to a more favourable method.
[–]icandoitnow 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Well you were cute until you opened your mouth. Have a good day!
Is there a better way to exit if she doesn't response well to you then saying this? I feel like this just makes you sound like a douche.
