Some of what the article says is alright except for the part about using self depreciating humor and the "brag-bite". The brag bite is pretty much just a humble brag and humor that is self-depreciating isn't really my thing.

Question: I recall some situations where someone would praise me about something I've done, my experience, etc., and I'd respond by kind of putting down whatever task I had accomplished. In my gut, this is the default response, but I've come to believe that this may not be the right thing to say.

An example: I'm a teaching assistant for one of my computer science courses. A friend told me, "Wow, you're so good at programming, you're a TA!". I replied, "Oh it's not a big deal, the material's just simple ezpz stuff."

In reality, the material is not that simple, and in fact by saying so I'm demeaning the students who come to my consulting hours to get help on homework and stuff. To top it all off, when I was in the course, I found it difficult and had to study a lot - only after gaining experience does it seem simple and basic now.

So my question is (and this may have been answered in the article, I'm not sure), how do I respond to someone praising me like that? I feel like belittling the difficulty of the task accomplished is not the way to go.

I am much more interested in this guy himself and the thought process behind the quote than the actual advice. The advice are just specific methods to try to reach this state of mind. They are observable consequences of it, which the author probably did (observe), and then wrote down. If we could understand that state of mind then the rest will fall into place. Why not try to attack the obvious problem instead of emulating the symptoms? I'd really like some light on this!
