what worked for me was going to the gym. as soon as i got noticeably bigger/leaner i guess i got cockier/more confident

There are already a couple good ideas here, but another way to improve self confidence is to stop caring what others say or do and just do what you want, cut loose be yourself, and when you realize that people will like you more for it, your confidence in yourself will rise

These are all good general ideas people have given. But I think everyone needs to be introspective and think about what makes them not confident, then you can work on attacking those issues specifically. I was a really insecure to begin with, so I had a lot to work on. One thing was looks, so I started working out, dressing better, paying attention to posture and body language, took care of some teeth issues and now I feel a lot better about myself. Another thing was that I felt I was boring and didn't have much to talk about. Now i've gone skydiving, lived in multiple countries, done some really interesting jobs, and more. On the other hand, a hot guy who feels like a dumb jock might start reading more, learning another language, going to some night classes or doing something more intellectual.

Did stuff that was interesting to me, and would better myself.

Kept working out, played more intramural sports, took dance classes, grew a kick-ass goatee etc.

Losing the weight I had gained needlessly probably helped the most.

to be honest, i feel like this might have to be something that you discover on your own. not that you cant get any guidelines or helpful tips or anything, but real confidence is found by being comfortable with yourself. it'll take time to figure out, but i'm sure it'll happen.
