It's all about intention. Do they know what your intentions are? If you have laid it out for them that you want to pursue then than it is a date. If you both have a mutual understanding that there is no romantic attraction than you're just looking at a hangout with a friend.

Going out with a friend and going on a date can be exactly the same. Except you might do a few more gentle kino touches if it’s a date. Although I know plenty of people that are just naturally flirty and touchy with friends. Otherwise it can be exactly the same.

Friendship is at the basis of every good relationship. Some guys don't even get to go on dates. Just enjoy the moment and take your time getting to know the person.

You could explicitly tell her that you want to go on a romantic date. But usually you will have set a sexual frame from the beginning with strong eye contact, touching her, flirting (sexual jokes, telling her you think she’s hot, etc).

When on the date, take her hand at the beginning and hold it and walk with her to where you’re going. Strong eye contact. Go in for a kiss at some point.

If inviting to a group hang going to an event, it's pretty ambiguous, and will depend how the night goes. If inviting one-on-one for drinks it's definitely a date. If you don't know each other super well and you invite on a one-on-one anything: coffee, brunch, whatever, it's pretty understood that's a date. Though kind of outdated, if she has the expectation that you pay or at least lack of surprise if you pay, than it's 100% a date.

In general women know if you're interested. Not always, and that doesn't mean you don't have to communicate interest -- making the implicit more explicit is part building attraction -- but if you think it's a date, she'll probably pick up on that real quick.

I imagine it usually has to do with intentions you both set? If you're dating someone that means you're trying to get to know them better to see if you two are compatible for something romantic or more than friends. Regardless of gender, you could go out on a "date" with friends, hangout with each other and enjoy life with no intention of something romantic (and sexual for that matter).

Nothing. If she’s attracted to you and thought you were just hanging out, when you make a move she’s not gonna hit you with the “I didn’t know it was a date/ we’re just friends”.
