I’m genuinely trying to understand something and would appreciate honest perspectives.

Over the years, I’ve had multiple experiences where people treat me in a strange or dismissive way, almost as if I were “repulsive,” without having any real contact or apparent reason. It happens often enough that I can’t ignore it anymore. I also feel like this extends into the romantic sphere, which makes me hesitant and apprehensive about approaching or connecting with people in that context as well.

Some examples:

  • At my gym, a few staff members treat me with clear disdain. I notice this because the contrast is obvious: some are friendly and polite, while others are cold, curt, or openly dismissive toward me, despite me always being respectful.
  • Back in college, when I was an intern, I tried to socialize more since I was new. One day I arrived early, sat next to another intern, and started a normal conversation. She suddenly stood up and moved to the other side of the room without saying anything.
  • More generally, I’ve noticed people developing an instant antipathy toward me with minimal or no interaction.

This happens with some frequency, and I honestly don’t understand why.

For context: I’m a calm, polite, introverted person. Physically, I’m fine: I’m in good shape, reasonably attractive, and I’m hygienic. I don’t have any extravagant behavior, I don’t act in a way that should cause embarrassment or discomfort to others, and I’m not rude or offensive.

My question is: what traits, behaviors, or non-verbal signals can make someone come across as unpleasant or trigger rejection before any real interaction happens?
