I have this problem too, I seem to ask all the questions. I think the point is to tease them into it, with things like sarcasm and open ended questions.

ive gotten the impression that sometimes girls are intimidated by a wall of questions.

ive seen people suggest you ask them to join you in a game of pool, get them interested in an activity, get their minds off of "someone is approaching me, I wonder what his goal is bla bla bla"

I suck at this game so by all means I need an expert to back me up or throw my suggestions on the ground and stomp them with dirt because Im not quite there yet. still practicing.

I've come to realize that asking questions I really don't give a fuck is not only boring for the girl, but for myself as well. Ask yourself this, do you really care what she studies at this current stage of the interaction or are you using it as a conversation thread? If the answer is the latter, you need to switch up what you're talking about.

The best way to get a more personal and intimate conversation is by asking questions you actually give a shit about. Ask her what's the craziest thing she's done in the past year, what her goals for the summer are (if she has any. If she doesn't, tease her on being a slacker), ask her shit you actually give a shit about. This stuff usually comes after you know the girl is attracted to you though. As much as I hate sticking to methods, Mystery had it right (Get interest from her -> Show interest back -> Get comfortable -> Close)

I think the best advice here is that you shouldn't be approaching women with "hey, what's your major?" That's the same thing that every guy who doesn't know how to pick up girls asks them. START with the attraction-related topics. It's likely to catch some women off guard, but it's going to bring more success.

I often just start talking about myself. Tell stories, anecdotes of what happened earlier, observations, anything you would also talk about to a friend.

Lots of "isn't it funny that..." or "man, I sure wish I..." or things like that. Contrary to what you'd think, this does not necessarily makes you come across as a self-centered jerk. Sharing thoughts and experiences is just more fun conversation than job interviews.
