I may be wrong, not a tax guy. But I think the CTC and EITC are a flat credit for most. The CTC maxes out at a fairly low salary. The EITC ramps up, maxes, then ramps down to zero with modest salaries fitting under the payout curve.

So basically, with low income exceptions, the government pays $2k max per kid to _someone_.

Social security, just for giggles, will pay out 150% for a worker and a stay at home spouse. This always bakes my noodle.

Parents collectively only get 1 exemption whether married or not. The IRS wants as much taxes as it can get. That is why the breadwinner in a divorce can not deduct CS and alimony paid to the other.

The court didn’t decide. We agreed on it so my monthly would be 1100 instead of 1400

If the court ruled/settlement agreement states she can claim both, then you can't claim them. In my agreement, each of us can claim one until they are 18 and then at that time, we each claim the remaining child on alternate years. You may be SOL on this one man.

Because to claim them you are saying you provided the majority of their expenses. You can't both cover more than half.
