Confirm with your attorney and the normal rules in your state. In my case I opened a new bank account, had my salary direct deposited to the new account, and ANY communal debts that needed to be paid I transferred to the joint account and paid from there. So there is a clear separation of assets / debts / expenses. You do not want to mix even 1 cent of money. In my case my attorney said that covers it. At final mediation parties agreed with that division, and all parties stated that if we went to trial a judge would agree too (not the same as actually going to trial, but 3 attorneys agreed).

Speak with a lawyer. My ex, 2 years after we had physically and financially separated, tried to move our "date of separation" from early 2020 to late 2022.

Her salary took a hit in that time and my salary increased.

I spent $10k in legal fees forcing that date of separation to stay where it was supposed to be, in 2020.

there’s also such a thing as a “continuation of separation” agreement which in essence says shit ain’t broke don’t fix it. If you don’t have a burning need to ACTUALLY divorce (my wife decided she’s a lesbian, granted she still has a strong disdain for me) but what has been working before can just continue on indefinitely. we have the extra expense of having to maintain a second place in an ungodly expensive area, but other than that we just keep treating our money how we always have. we also have similar incomes tho - im not so sure this would make sense with a stay at home mom.

BUT, there was no dealing with alimony, child support, custody…. and by kicking the can down the road if/when the day DOES come you will be in a much more amicable place to figure them out.

it’s kind of crazy we go through divorces at the height of our animosity for each other, just wanting to screw each other over as much as possible. our mediator said she wished everyone would just live under different roofs for a year, so the above, and then come back to the table.

you’ll end up realizing using every last cent of your money fighting for custody might not be so well spent. we have 3 kids and now the fights are over who has to take them.

Each state is different, but generally, get a new bank account only in your name. Put the money in there and keep the paper trail. Paystubs, etc.
