I take a self defense class, and I LOVE IT. My classmates are great, I can feel myself getting better, and it makes me commit to 45m of aerobic exercise 3 days a week.

There’s just one problem. I don’t know how I feel about the instructor. He’s got a lot of experience, is great about balancing proper form and effectiveness, and very very careful about safety. He’s super friendly, and always makes sure to tell us something specific that we did well in class. He tries to be very open and welcoming. However, while we’re facing off he yells instructions (because of covid we’re out in a field), and occasionally will swear if we’re fucking up (I.e. “GUYS, STOP SHADOW BOXING, SONUVABITCH”).

Unbeknownst to him, I have a history of domestic and workplace abuse, so naturally, I have a low tolerance for this. I can deal with getting hit while someone shouts nearby, OR getting hit while someone swears, but not all three at once. I get mad, then stressed, then depressed and self-recriminating.

A friend of mine who’s been working with him for 4 years thinks if I tell him this, he’ll change his tactics, but… my gut says I should do the business equivalent of block and delete, lol. I was considering finding another but am concerned that any ‘fighting’ class is going to have the same triggers, or be more dangerous (I’ve heard some real nightmare stories) so I might as well just give him, as a business, the chance to redeem himself. Thoughts? Experiences?
